Lucky Eruptive Prom catch. Up n Over uʍop ɹǝpun

Post by Peterm »

G'day all,

I made a couple of animations this morning and will take a while to sift through before posting. However while scanning the Solar Disk on the Chile GONG site I saw that there was an eruptive prominence that had just started on the NW limb. The overall eruptive event was short lived but I did manage to catch this 30 minutes of animation from UT 2023/01/18 21:28 to 21:58 My local time 0728am to 0758am January 19th 2023. The animation has not been sped up and is rotated counter clockwise for effect.

Thanks for having a squiz!

please click on the image below and it will open the animation in my Astrobin Gallery.

Thanks indeed all.

I have been doing some experimenting with color images after seeing Martins stunning double stacked images this week. These are single stack with the 80mm Lunt.
I may even sell off some of my Supernova hunting/discovery gear that has served me and the BOSS team (Backyard Observatory Supernova Search) so well over the years. The gear is now largely redundant due to the many pro sky surveys operating, it maybe time to get the Lunt 80mm PT unit... and a Quark hehe. BOSS have made 195 discoveries todate, but the effort required to get to that 200 along with fun I am having with Solar viewing and imaging has made me rethink my overall Astro. Geez this Solar stuff is addictive!

For the 2nd & 3rd image with the North pointer, I used Microsoft ICE to stitch 2 images together.

I agree. This solar stuff is VERY addictive. I rarely observe deep sky and planetary anymore. I think it's the ever-changing nature of the sun that interests me the most.

I believe he means he did not decrease the standard time delay between frames since this is 30 minutes compressed to 6 seconds. Correct Peter Marples?

I knew exactly what you meant since you and I have discussed how I will sometimes decrease the frame delay to “speed up” an animation when the movement is very slow.

Thanks Clare and Peter.
Hehe, yup I should have worded that better, as Warren has. I
was really knocked out by how fast the prom was changing.
It reminded me why I am enjoying Solar so much. In GIMP I often change the ms from the default of 100 to say 20-50 to show movement. This time I could have set it over 100!

My little black book of Oz-isms reminded me of a squiz, a word I hadn't seen in ages. So for our Northern friends squiz=have a look.

Great animation and images Peter. I sold off pretty much all my night time stuff because of light pollution.
