The Great Spot of AR3190 in High Res | Jan 18th 2023

Post by MalVeauX »

Hi all,

My morning was clouds and overcast haze, but it really warmed up today and sometimes my seeing is pretty fair following passing clouds and haze when the temperature is not frigid (Florida cold, hah). It was pretty turbulent mid-afternoon around 1200 Eastern time, an atypical time for me to even attempt to image solar, but it was the only time I would have before this weekend and the weather is looking poor the rest of the week. I ran about 13 sequences back to back lucky imaging at high FPS to hope for a few good frames in a moment of good seeing and managed to get something around that 0.7 arc-second range in a block of red wavelengths (610~700nm). The great spot of AR3190 is fabulous with lots of interesting features in the penumbra with huge reaching penumbral filaments and penumbral grains, reaching into the dark umbra. The penumbra is what the great spot is all about and it's currently about an earth diameter right now. The great spot itself is about 5 earth diameters tall and even more in width. None of its light bridges so far have stayed put, so it's not quite in its decay period yet, so we will see, this one may stick around for a 2nd transit potentially.

Equipment:

I used pretty simple equipment today, a C8 SCT and some Baader Solar Film.

C8 SCT (200mm F10)
Baader ND3.8 Solar Film (full aperture)
Baader UV/IR Block Filter
Baader Red 610nm Long Pass Filter
GSO Polarizing Filter
2x Barlow (operating around F20)
IMX174 Sensor (164 FPS)

0.3 arc-seconds per pixel image scale

Seeing was around 0.7 arc-seconds during time of capture for this image scale and resolution and wavelength

These are excellent Marty! Great use of the longer wavelengths and big aperture to critical sample!

Very nice high resolution shot. A lot of details in the fibrils and granulation
