Double stacking a SolarSpectrum 0,5A?

Post by Sergio Alessandrelli »

Hi to all

I’m actually using a SolarSpectrum H-Alpha filter, 0.5A. Sometimes appears on second hand markets used PST or Quarks with much larger band. Could it be usefull to double stack the SS with one of these filters or better in a future (far future 🤣), going on a 0,3A SS/Daystar unit? Double stack is not so easy and anything (bf etc.) is becoming really expensive and not easy to find. I use the SS on a 132mm apo and now I’m working to adapt the SS on a 7” f/10 Rumak from Intes/Santel.

Thank you for your suggestions 😉

Sergio

Hi Sergio,

My recommendation would be to double stack your SS with an air spaced etalon like one from a PST or Lunt.

Martin_S does a great job double stacking his SS with a small Solarscope etalon (or is it Maurits?), he has shown plenty of pics in his posts

Sergio, I have a Solar spectrum 0.7A and have double stack it with a 30mm SolarScope UK etalon from Beloptik Germany.
It's a 2" cell with on both sides T2 thread.

For more details see on my website under equipment.

I was thinking to a pst etalon, it’s a system I already used in the past and the easier to find second hand. Pst should be put before or After the SS? After the SS it could require a BF i think. Thanks you 😉

Hello,
You can double stack a PST etalon (without the associated collimating lens) on a mica-spaced etalon.
I've made some tests with a Solarspectrum +PST and also a DayStar Quantum + PST. The quality of the result depends on the quality of each etalon. No surprise there.
You can place the air-spaced etalon in front of or after the mica-spaced etalon, as long as you use a telecentric beam.

Given of the good reputation of SolarScope, the option described by Maurits is certainly attractive.

I use a Lunt 40mm etalon after my quark to double stack. Attached via this adapter: https://rafcamera.com/adapter-lunt-40mm

Hello everyone!

A good opportunity to introduce myself!
I own a 0,5 Solarspectrum, and as Christian said, we can put in the telecentric beam another etalon (mica or air spaced).
from right to left, Celestron with MCM ERF coating on schmidt plate, beloptik 3,5x telecentric, lunt 50 air etalon, SS 0,5A.
for lighter set up, I sometimes use telecentric, SS 0,5 then a PST without lenses or lunt 35 front bodie.

Welcome Seb, I thought a time ago on the same double stack solution but I was afraid about the weight issues of the Lunt 50mm air etalon.

Nice view and equipment.

Hi Maurits,

I was not able to find any info about this "double stack" SolarScope 30mm etalon.
Can you give us maximum information about this etalon and it's availability.

If possible, create a separate thread.

Thanks.

Valery
