1-28-23. Quick WL view and Ha prominences.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today before leaving for Lowndesville S.C. I did a quick white light observation and Ha observation concentrating on prominences. My session time was from 16:00 until 16:32 UTC. Clear skies with below average seeing and the temperature was a much warmer 48F ( 8.8C ).

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 41.5x ( WLC )
I can see nine active regions across the solar disc but this isn't as impressive as it sounds. All are small with small spots and pores only.

A patch of faculae without spot or pore is seen near the NE limb. Well WNW of it just east of the CLM lies a single spot that is associated with AR13201. It shows umbra-penumbra form. AR13203 SW of AR13201 is seen only as a single pore. SDO HMI shows two. I can barely detect AR13200 as a mere shading on the photosphere NW of AR13203. It's a cloud of tiny unresolved pores! AR13204 to the west is a group of a single leading small spot and attending pores. AR13198 is a small spot in the far NW. A patch of faculae is seen SW of it that is associated with AR13196. I see no trace of AR13199.

Two large pores are seen in the SW quadrant. No number is assigned to this region on the SWL SDO image. A patch of faculae is seen in the SE quadrant.

I did not notice any granulation on the solar photosphere today.

Coronado SolarMax 60 SS. 16x, 25x and 33x. ( 656.28nm )
Today's goal was a quick observation of prominences around the limb.

A bright split-prom is seen on the NE limb with the larger part south. The NW prom is large and easy. It has two voids high up in the middle and another low center. This prom changes noticeably in the half-hour that I observe it. A smaller bright prom lies just to the south of the big one. Further south on the SW limb lies a low elongated bright prominence. A thin gap can be seen in its lower southern portion. The SE quadrant shows a couple of other small proms close together.

Even in single stack I can see the band of plage active regions in the northern hemisphere and filaments and also plage in the SE quadrant and with a close look filaments are seen there too. A hard to see plage is also visible in the SW quadrant. At 0.07A bandwidth though lower in contrast than 0.05A I can still see surface detail without issue.

Off I go. Have a good day everyone!

James

Excellent James! thanks for the lovely report and I hope you have a wonderful day at your Dad's :hamster: all the spots are very small, you did well to observe them.

Thanks and welcomes everyone. The spots were indeed small and casually many could be missed. Having an SDO white light image at the scope helps me locate many in the scope.

That NW prominence was really nice too.

James.

You are welcome. Have you done any more observations along the canals lately?

Not been on the boat since over Christmas. I've been in work on saturdays since the new year doing 'saturday school', this is carrying on until february half termm holiday. We're away then for a week so any boating will be end of February / early march. Not enough time in the world :(

Mark,
I know what you mean by not having enough time. It's a common issue for me too and I don't see retirement any time soon.
