Thursday Session 16-03-2023

Post by Martin_S »

It was a stinker of a hot day here in Brisbane ,the seeing was poor, I attempted am animation of the Big northern prom.
Then disaster struck .My PST etalon and camera fell onto the concrete patio, luckily there was no damage to the camera or etalon.
I inspected the Quark 2'' eyepiece holder, the clamping screw thread in the holder had stripped.
Further analysis revealed that there was only about 2mm wall thickness supporting a M4 thread, not good, when you consider the fact that most cameras are expensive items.

So I re engineered the eyepiece holder and made a compression flange, this time with 2 clamping screws at right angle to each other and a grub screw to secure the flange to the eyepiece barrel. It looks over engineered but it will never fail.

Here are todays results and my new flange.

Thanks franco, if you are using a Quark 2" eyepiece holder with your Cak H quark I'd suggest that you check it regularly.

Martin:
Fortunately no damage to sensitive parts, a real good looking adapter you made.
Best wishes.
Eric.

Martin,
I am glad your equipment suffered no damage. That in itself is amazing. You got lucky!

You having a machine shop and the skill to use it proves handy in this hobby.

Nice prom animation, despite the seeing.

James
