March 19th Session

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

Winter seems to want to hold its grip here, and after cloud and snow flurries cleared late morning I headed to the observatory. Activity did not look overly impressive when I looked online earlier, but I was impressed with the views of new activity in WL and then the Ha scope still had a wow factor ;)
I had more time available to image today, so I did a full set of FD images in WL, CaK, and Ha.

The Ha image is a composite of separate disk and limb exposures through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha solar scope with an ASI1600MM camera. The WL and CaK were imaged through the Orion EON 130 OTA with a Lunt Solar Wedge/Baader Continuum filter and the CaK used a modded Lunt Soalr Wedge/B1800CaK filter set:

For higher resolution Ha images, I switched to the ASI290MM camera and 2.5x barlow...still only on the small scope but it was the easiest setup to work with. I managed to assemble a higher resolution mosaic of most of the disk, with a bite out of the southern part of the disk...looking like the Pacman character:

The new AR rotating into view in the NE showed changes over a short period of time with a jet developing between the two images belwo that were taken approximately 30 mins apart:

The limb sported several proms as well:

Great set of photos.

You had a great session, Brian. Very nice results. The PACMAN sun even has eyes

The new active region(s) look suitably complex for significant flare activity over the coming days....assuming they don't fizzle away.

Great session, Brian. The FD’s look sharp and neat and I really like the prom detail in the last one.

Great session Brian! I caught some of those surges in an animation yesterday but the cold temps caused the image to lose contrast and everything brightened over time so not sure if I can make anything of it other than some still shots.
