Re: May Solarchat Zoom 14th May 2023
Here are some promotional slides to encourage people to attend. The topics I hope to cover are:
- A brief history of SHG
- The important design elements of the instrument
- Capturing data
- The image reconstruction software

Hi Doug,
For sure that will be very interesting.
... but, Moderate cost ? compared to what ?
Sorry could not resist
If I would sell mine I would need to get US $ 2,000.00 more or less ...

Re: May Solarchat Zoom 14th May 2023
I think the real sweet spot for the SHG technique is about 100mm aperture, 700mm focal length. So compare to a double stack Lunt 100.

Re: May Solarchat Zoom 14th May 2023
Hi,
I hope not to anticipate to 14th May presentation, but does that mean that I get for US $ 2,000.00 what I would get with a Lunt ranging from US $ 6,300.00 to about US $ 10,650.00 ?
Did I understand that correctly ?
Rainer

Re: May Solarchat Zoom 14th May 2023
In terms of spectral bandwidth, spatial resolution and ability to look at H-alpha, Ca-K and continuum (which is I think what Lunt means by "fully loaded") at a focal ratio that allows full disk imaging, I think that is in fact a not unreasonable comparison.
I assume by $2,000 you are including the cost of the telescope but not the mount? I think the cost of the spectrometer itself is no more than $1,000. But a 100mm aperture f7 ED doublet is maybe another $1000 (e.g. the Starfield 102mm f/7 ED Doublet Refractor), and a good mount like an HEQ5 Pro at a minimum is required (around another $1000).
With regards to the spectrometer, the two most expensive elements are the grating (around $200) and the camera (around $300). I'm quite sure all the other materials can be sourced at less than $500 in total.

Re: May Solarchat Zoom 14th May 2023
Hi Doug,
The US $ 2,000.00 I mention is only for my Sol'Ex complete with camera and 3 stepper motors not including the 60mm telescope. The 60mm finder telescope I am using would be another US $ 130.00 ...
A mount id not included ... and this is also somthing critical. My mounts cost US $ 7,000.00 and are not able to track at 16X (but this is another story) and so I have to stop the mount and acquire my videos during 2.5 minutes in average for getting the full Sun disk through the slit.
The complete optical set from Shelyak is already US $ 550.00 ... The statements that a Sol'Ex can be build for US $ 500.00 mentioned from other authors are a little bit exaggerated
IMHO without motorizing the Sol'Ex a good focusing and bandwidth choosing is nearly impossible. Also now after playing with my Sol?ex the focusing is in 2d eg. telescope to slit and camera to grating ... and running back and forth from computer to Sol'Ex is a real PITA .... IMHO ...
Especially if one has to print multiple times due to the fact of wrong *.stl files ...
OK, RANT over ...
Rainer
Maybe I can sell my classic car and finance new mounts (NON chinese origin)
