Sun images from Melbourne Australia 22 March 2023

Post by Averton »

Another game of cat and mouse with the clouds. Again it wasn't meant to be clear, but there was a chance to grab some images. The average seeing was 3.1 arc seconds with a standard deviation of 1.4. The large std-dev was due to the clouds. If you look at the reference line you can see the large dips when big banks of clouds went through with the resultant large swings in the seeing. If you do a rough eyeball average taking those areas out, the seeing actually wasn't too bad (around 2.5) with some dips down to around 1.0. We employed our usual lucky lucky approach taking 7-8 videos for each image and managed to have one good one in each batch. Very pleased about this :)

We took our usual Ha full disk two panel mosaic. After so many proms last time, there were very few to see today. A very faint remnant on the western limb, a surge north of east and some small proms south of east. Both of these looked like there maybe some new regions coming round the limb.

We then took a full disk in 393nm.

And a close up of the group of ARs 3257, 3259 and 3256 in 540nm.

At this point the clouds called end of play!

Great set of shots! I watched some of the GONG videos and those proms on the western limb just kind of faded away.

Thanks Franco, Warren, Martin, Terry, Marios and Maurits for your comments - much appreciated.

Warren - we also watched those western proms just disappear.

These are gorgeous, especially the long polar crown filament in the north :bow :hamster: this filament is even more prominent in the ultra narrow CaK of the SHG images, it is like a straight line across the cap.

Superb work, Avertons! I am drawn to the CaK 3nm bandpass image. Those faculae show up really well.
