Chapter 3 of Idea of a Cooling Aid assistance for cameras

Post by rsfoto »

Hi,

Having been approched by Ken aka "Merlin66" in Australia who asked me if it is possible to sandwich a TEC in my Cooling Aid I purchased some TEC1-12706 as well as a controller W1206 and started to implement this.

Below some images of the final result.

The first position of the controller in the area of the heatsink and TEC the sir did not flow as well as in the other posiiton. I noticed this because yesterday I ran the same set up without the Controller support as the temperature of the camera achieved yesterday was 1.5°C lower then today. In the image with the multimeter you can see the new position and it is much better.

In the graph you can see that from a camera temperature of 42 degrees it went down to ~25°C. Not bad. As soon as I have Sun I will test it live.

Next step is going to be to adapt a 50mm fan.

Rainer

Wow! did you really mean -25 degrees or did you mean +25?

It looks like that's a squiggle, not a minus sign. So I guess he means "about 25C".

That drop from around 40 degrees is pretty impressive. I didn't think it would be possible because from my experience, the sensor is not particularly well heatsunk to the back of the camera for ZWO planetary cameras.

Hi,

Today another session and the cooling looks good. Seems to be that I am able to get my camera to ambient temperaure but today having a cold day it was going even under the ambient temperature.

I ordered some 50x50x20mm heatsinks and will test that too to see the difference to the 40x40x20mm heatsink using in both cases the 40x40mm TEC1-12706.

As you can see the temperature when I closed the session was even 3.6°C under ambient temperature. It started to get colder and the wind was colder too

Hi,

Today I did not wait to warm up the camera but immediately started to cool it.

It kept it always under ambient temperature, A pity that firecapture does not also write the focuser which is the one measuring ambient temperature. I asked Torsten but looks like he is not much interested in adding it. He told me he wrote it down on his list but that is it.

Hi,

OK, I ran some tests with the 50mm heat sink and blowing and that is the way I will leave it for now like that.

Below an image of the cooler on the ASI 178MM as well as a temperature graph. The image was taken at the end of the test. So more or less ~2°C below ambient temperature and heat sink working at 48.7°C. I adjusted the W1209 controller to Heat and it shuts off the TEC at 55°C. So today it was running all the time.

With this I finish my testing and will look for a new project. Maybe 2 TEC's sandwiched ?
