March 30 2023. Ha Imaging Session.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today I imaged for about half an hour between 15:00 and 16:00 UTC. The skies are clear with seeing a bit better than yesterday but still short of average. The temperature is 55F ( 12.7C )

The telescope used is the Coronado SolarMax II 90 in Single Stack. The camera is the PGR Grasshopper running on a MacOS High Sierra MacBook Pro running ASTRO IIDC. The images are processed and edited in GIMP and PhotoShop CS6.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Nice session James, particularly on the proms! Your disks are evenly illuminated and I am surprised you aren't able to draw out a bit more contrast on the disks even with the single stack. Not being an expert on etalons from Coronado I can't say if it is well tuned or not and if simply some additional processing would bring out a few more details.

Warren,
I agree. the disk ones are a bit short on contrast. Not sure why. I'll have to see if I can wean any more out of them. I was however pleased that the illumination is even. It seems that when I increase the contrast to make details show up better on the disc using GIMP or PhotoShop that it blows the highlights out of proportion making the center of the disc too bright and therefore making the disc unevenly lit. :-(

I was pleased with the proms too. If the seeing would have been a bit better they would have turned out really well.

Very well done, James. I love those proms ! I was out also this morning doing CaH and WL: will post later. The seeing here was not particularly good today, but the next days are going to be horrible, so I had to do something.

Thanks Petrus. I usually do better on proms than I do on the disk itself.

Thanks Maurits. The discs seem to be evenly tuned and illuminated but need a bit more contrast and sharpness. The proms are good but the seeing has reduced their sharpness a bit.

It looks like no observations today. It's overcast outside and Slooh Teide and the KSO are under clouds too. :-(

I'll still save images from the GONG network and the SDO to have a record for the day.

Thanks Eric!

Using PhotoShop 2020 I did a little more playing with one of the images.

I think PhotoShop is a bit more capable than GIMP is, but it should be. GIMP is very good though considering it's available for free!
