Travel to US for Annular Eclipse 2023

Post by astroshot »

Myself and my wife are thinking of flying to the US for this annual eclipse.
Thinking of basing ourselves around Albuquerque for a few days.
See more info here:
https://eclipsophile.com/ase2023/
and cloud statistics here:
https://eclipsophile.com/wp-content/upl ... /Fig-3.png
Anyone else planning to travel for it?
Regards,
Michael.

Hi Michael,

Thats a very interesting website, I had not come across that before!!
Reading the annular eclipse report - that is very long, I will go into that later.
I am not sure if it would be worthwhile to go to a annular eclipse as you have to view it always with eclipse filters and can never take them off during the eclipse!!

Have you found out the cost of a possible trip to Mexico/Albuqueque ?
What equipment will you take there ? Light and cheerful or full works - heavy tripods and big refractors ?

Oh, my wife and I planned to travel to the US for the annular eclipse of 2023. I know it will be visible in Mexico and many countries in South and Central America. Btw, we have a lot of trips planned for 2023. We want to visit Paris, Venice, and Frankfurt. However, I think the first destination will be Istanbul, as we found reasonable offers on https://www.freetour.com/istanbul. I guess it's obvious we love to travel and learn about new cultures. I am curious about what will surprise us the most in Turkey.

Magnus,
It will need to be a light setup for airline carry-on purposes.
Myself and my wife enjoy travelling to see solar eclipses, so the annular will be something different for us.
Good excuse to travel to the US as well.
Nice part of the country for fab scenery.

For totals, I normally carry a Manfrotto tripod, Canon DSLR camera and a 100-400mm lens.
Might try a simpler setup this time - need to think about it.

Michael.

I’m going to drive down from Arkansas. I’ll probably take a tent so I can quickly adjust my location based on predicted weather but who wouldn’t want to go to Roswell for a solar eclipse 😀

That’s a great site you linked.

Folks,
As an update, we decided to fly in to Las Vegas instead and will tour a couple of National Parks. We will spend a night next to Monument Valley and observe the annual eclipse from there.
As for gear, I will have:
- Slik Sprint Mini II tripod
- Skywatcher Mount AZ GTI
- Canon 60d
- Canon 100-400 lens with 1.4x extender.
They will all hopefully fit in the carry-on bag with my belongings. Only going for 1 week and weather should be warm.
What gear are others here planning to use?
Michael.

Michaels,

George just told me Monument Valley Monument is closed for the eclipse :
https://www.deseret.com/utah/2023/9/18/ ... ley-closed

Still, this is road 42, road 163 seems to remain open.

Just One Week!

Looking at the 10 Day weather forecast, it's looking good for all of Texas, except for very coastal (Corpus Christi).
I have settled on Garner State Park, in between Uvalde and Leakey, somewhat near San Antonio.
Weather Underground - Weather Channel says 0% chance of rain, 40% Humidity (decreasing), 10% cloud cover (also decreasing), high 75* F, nearly perfect IMO.
It is free to attend at Garner SP, but you are asked to pre-register through Uvalde County's site and they will email you a "Pass" to print.

Good Luck to all that are venturing out to see this, may your Eclipse be wonderful!

I'm headed to Hobbs, NM for the eclipse. Looks best for clear skies within a day's drive from Phoenix. If anyone knows where people will gather there on Saturday morning, I'd love to hear about it. I'll be using my heliostat mounted h-Alpha filtered scope.

An alternative would be Midland Texas, University of Texas Permian Basin is having an event there.

Hi Michael...

Glad to see that you and Denise had the skies as forecast and your shot looks awesome :bow

Much better on the full computer screen vs the view on the phone last night.
