AR3288-3285 in white light with the Mewlon 250

Post by christian viladrich »

Hi,
The weather has been continiously very bad since February. Today, I had a short clearing between two clouds. This was the chance for a first light of the Mewlon 250 with an OIII filter.

http://astrosurf.com/viladrich/astro/so ... ASI290.jpg

Next try will be with the G-band filter.

Christian

WoW, Christian. This is the way the photosphere is supposed to look! Top-notch work. The granulation and spot detail is impressive. The Takahashi Mewlon 250 does VERY well. How do the Mewlons compare with Celestron's Edge HD Schmidt Cassegrains?

I use a full aperture Astrosolar ND 3.8 and an Astronomik OIII 12 nm filter.

Sure Aaron, the faint light bridges and the umbral dots are quite interesting.
DeepSolar64 wrote: Fri Apr 28, 2023 4:46 am The Takahashi Mewlon 250 does VERY well. How do the Mewlons compare with Celestron's Edge HD Schmidt Cassegrains?
James, finally the Mewlon is doing good. I have the "old" version. The one without the coma corrector. So the diffraction limited field is very small. Still, it appears OK considering the field covered by the ASI290.
Collimation stability is quite good too. This is a nice surprise since I collimated it more than one year ago.
Compared to the Celestron's EdgeHD, the Mewlon has a smaller central obstruction (about 25% vs 33%) which gives some more contrast.

Considering that the current version of the Mewlon includes a coma corrector, this is certainly a good telescope for solar imaging. Still, much more expensive than the EdgeHD OTA.

I am planning to test it in G-band (430 nm) and also Ha.

Thanks Mark ! It was a rather short clearing. Forecast for the newt five days are bad again. This has been the worst year for solar observation since the last 10 years :-(

Superb, Christian. These are beautifully sharp and detailed images. Nothing less than expected from you :) The Mewlon is working well.

I hope your weather picks up soon to give you more opportunities than you’ve had over the past couple of months.

Im confident, this Mewlon sounds like a good and compact allround platform for solar images in different wavelengths.
But also interesting to see how well the astrosolar film works under more extreme magnifications.
