May 22 2023 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was from 14:37 until 15:22 UTC. The skies were totally overcast with varying thickness of cloud that varies from very thin allowing a good but relatively dim image to shine through to one that does not allow an image of the sun to penetrate it at all. Again I choose continuum over Ha because of it's brighter and higher contrast image does better with a cloud-dimmed sun. The seeing was quite good and the temperature was 67F ( 19.4C ). I am back in Edneyville N.C. today.

I also caught the KanzelHohe Solar Observatory in Austria still running it's high cadence near live images during my session. They of course give a great view of the Sun in absence of being able to observe in Ha with my own equipment and they are my main source of CaK data. Slooh Teide Ha was down for clouds today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 31x, 41.5x. ( WLC )
The active region complex of AR13313-11 and 14 appears as a line of spots and pores in the NE quadrant. AR13313 is seen as a single structured spot in the NE part of the line being a bit separated from the others. The center of the line is AR13311 and is a collection of two structured spots and pores. AR13314 at the SE side of the line is marked by a single structured spot. AR13308 can be seen in the NW quadrant as a single spot that is surrounded by faint faculae.

The SE quadrant shows AR13310 as a nice large spot with a light bridge in the SE side of it's umbra. I can also see two more pores east and northeast of the big spot. During times of thinnest clouds I can see 4 tiny pores in the vicinity as well. 41.5x also hints some mottling in the large spot's penumbra. AR13312 ( SE Quad ) is seen as a pore line in which I cannot resolve the individual pores except for the easternmost one. A second pore is seen south of that pore. I see nothing in the SW quadrant.

The clouds render the granulation unnoticeable.

James

Welcome!, That big spot in AR13310 should have been very easy to see!!

Thanks Alexandra. I do love white light. Today is yet another cloudy day for me giving me only low power white light views. May has been unusually cloudy for me.
