May 23 2023 WL Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today's white light observations are very hit-and-miss intermittent due to an overcast sky with varying thicknesses of clouds. Most of the time the Sun isn't visible at all. The total setup time was from 15:00-16:00 UTC but I got less than 10 minutes of this to observe through what thin places in the clouds they were. It was a waiting game. The seeing however is a bit above average and the temperature 66F ( 18.8C ). Breezy. It would have been easier to have used the Lunt SUNoculars!

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 31x and 41.5x. ( WLC )
AR13313 is seen as a single structured spot in the NE quadrant. Just to it's W-WSW lies AR13311. Its seen seen as a group of structured spots in it's eastern part with some small spots/pores involving some penumbrae in the western part of the group. AR13314 is but a single round structured spot nearing the CLM. I see nothing in the NW quadrant.

At the Central Longitudinal Meridian in the southern hemisphere I see the big spot of AR13110. At 41.5x I can see a bit of a light bridge within it's umbra and I can also hint some penumbral mottling. I can see four small spots/pores just to its E-NE. AR13312 to the ESE of AR13110 is seen as a scattering of tiny spots and pores. The GONG WLAI image shows two pores in the far SE quadrant but clouds covered the sun and never cleared back off therefore preventing me from finding them. I saw nothing in the SW quad.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. :-(

James

Thanks for the report JAmes, glad you got to use the 70mm. I got a nice (hazy!) view last night after work with the sunoculars, and just had a nice (clear) view with the sunoculars. The spots are really easy at the momnent which is nice.

My weather has been really poor over the last week. Just too many damn clouds! And the big spot of AR13110 is really nice, even in the little 8x32s!!

Thanks Mr. Townley.
