Have you tried new smart imaging telescopes like Stellina or Unistellar eVscope?

Post by Solarscout »

I haven't seen any of these new robotic imaging telescopes in person yet but they are being promoted online and in magazines. I'm curious about this new imaging technology in smart telescopes and how it compares to traditional visual astronomy through an eyepiece. Have you tried them, and what are your experiences with them in general? Did you use a solar filter?

Personally I really like the idea of these personal robotic imaging " smart " telescopes. These manufacturers have made it as easy as possible to image an object. The scopes align themselves, find the object that you select from a database and then track and image it using a series of short exposures that is stacked automatically to form a final image. It's something a beginner can set up and easily do! The only drawback is the cost. The 50mm Vaonis Vespera will set you back 2000 USD, the 80mm Vaonis Stellina is 4 thousand US dollars and the Vaonis Hyperia a 6" triplet will set one back 45,000 USD! All are fully automated apochromatic refractors.

Unistellar's two offerings look good too. They are 114mm reflectors that also come with a Nikon electronic eyepiece! These scopes, there are two models, run between 2499 and 4800 USD.

Both Vaonis and Unistellar's instruments have available solar filters for them too.

Another option is to subscribe to a robotic telescope service. I subscribed to the Slooh service not quite a year ago and it works well. It's set up more for educators and schools but individuals can subscribe as well. Their telescopes are located in Chile and in the Canary islands at the Teide Observatory. One schedules time in 10 minute sessions on the nighttime telescopes and at the set time the telescope slews to the object that you have selected and starts imaging. Like the robotic telescopes mentioned above, Slooh takes a series of images and stacks them as you watch. You can see the image brighten and change and the color gradually comes in before you get your final image. I think it depends on the subscription package but I know they do offer video imaging without their automated stacking and processing on their nighttime scopes where one can do their own image stacking and processing. Their Canary5 Lunt LS60Tha Ha scope on Mt Teide however does not offer video stacking and you don't have to schedule time on it. It is a live video feed. It however does have some automated image processing and is colored by their software. One just snaps a capture from their live feed. It's really nice on cloudy days when I cannot use my own equipment!

Here's one of mine from Slooh. I commonly post solar images from Slooh in my solar posts.

And I am sure some here have automated their own solar telescopes with GoTo, tracking and ZWO ASIair units. The sky is the limit. Have fun folks!

They are expensive toys for rich people who know absolutely nothing about astronomy and astrotechnology. They play with it a few times, find out that it's not as wonderful as the advertisement says and put it in the closet. I had the opportunity to try it out and I was not impressed at all. For that money, any competent amateur can build a much better device.

Expensive they are. That’s their biggest drawback. It should be awesome for the price!

I do like the concept though.

I'm of a similar opinion to pupak, and don't see much of a market for this. Most beginners start with simple 'scopes to dip their toes into the waters and see if they're into astro at all. Most advanced amateurs assemble their setups themselves (going through many iterations/variants over the years). High-end, turnkey solutions like those mentioned are for... whom? A handful of very wealthy beginners, I guess.

That's a distinction unrelated to smart telescopes. Visual observing, astrophotography and finally EEVA (electronically assisted astronomy/electronically enhanced visual astronomy) are three very different activities.

I wonder how long the electronics in these smart telescopes will last. A lot of electronics do good to exceed 5 years, much less 10. And then there is the stability of the company who made them. What happens if they go out of business? How is their tech support? Do you have to ship them across the ocean if they break? With that cost all of these bases should be covered.

A remote telescope service avoids these possible issues. And of course there are those who build their own “ smart “ scopes. And since they use different and probably more secure companies, tech support isn’t as big an issue. And if the electronics break the scope still works with an eyepiece!

I would like to see this work. An easy affordable smart robotic telescope. Some want it easy and simple. Like me!

Look here are descriptions of the solar filters available for these Smart imaging telescopes.
This is the Vaonois page on solar observations through their telescopes.

It seems to have lots of good beginner information on observing and software!

Great for dark sky objects, setup in 2 minutes
Control inside, wifi through a window, sit in the warm inside. Very techy machine, lots to take apart. You should try it.
ZWO seestar is not as expensive. Might tick some boxes. Not for solar though!

Hi,

After being in this amateur astronomy business for more then 20 years and having setup 3 observatories I do find them now boring. One focal length, no filter wheel and so no narrow band imaging, no Spectroscope to put on, no Spectroheliograph to put on ... did I forget something?

Unpack it, Place it, Plug into outlet and turn ON and you are done.

Somewhere I read 5000+ objects. I have now more then 200,000 objects and can input custom coordinates which then makes my catalog HUGE ...

Somehow boring ... I could not tinker with it ...

If I get one for testing then I for sure find something ...

According to this the ZWO Seestar is solar capable. It’s much lower price seems more realistic for a beginner.

When I combine AsiAir with StarAid on CG5 with N200F4 and Camera 294C and 425M, I get a high-end robotic workplace for a fraction of the price of those designer toys ala Apple. It will not be such an elegant All in one solution, but it will be an order of magnitude better in terms of the display of DS objects and the Sun.

Interesting way to use a telescope, seems more for people with no patience for the processes behind.
Doesnt work with the sun.
Im keeping an eye on this technology, curious to see how it develops in the future.

Or those who have little time. They do have white light solar filters with some of these automated telescopes.

Like you I am curious where it goes. The sad part about GoTo and these fully automated systems is one never really learns the night sky. Using altazimuth telescopes exclusively when I was young I had to learn the sky. It was me, the scope and star charts with a red flashlight. I would recommend for anyone to learn the sky the old way before buying a GoTo or smart telescope. It's knowledge that stays with you for life!

Good point about educational institutions - I agree it would make sense for them, without having the teacher or student(s) having to become expert(s) in amateur HW&SW. On the other hand, there's the question of long-term support (do those scopes all run on bespoke hardware interfaces and software? Something widely used like ASCOM/INDI/common camera APIs would be better).

Smart telescopes would be good for outreach too. Their images could be viewed real time on computers and smart devices. Of course this ties in closely with educational institutions.
