Venus UV from 9-May-23

Post by KMH »

I finally got a period of good seeing while imaging Venus, and was able to try out the Thor Labs 400/40 nm filter again (the sun is losing out to my current Venus obsession!). It may lack the contrast of a shorter wavelength filter, but it seems like a really good option for my C11 SCT. In contrast, my Baader UV filter is not at all useful with this scope.

This video was taken at 19:27 local time, about 32 minutes before sunset, or 01:27 (May 10) UT.

Celestron Edge 11
2x Powermate
ASI462MM camera
Thor Labs 400/40 nm filter
Exposure 3.49 ms
Gain 254 (42%)
16000 frames stacked out of 90000
Processed in Astra Image and Photoshop.

Alexandra - this seems like a very good filter option if you're still interested in imaging Venus with your C11.

That is a phantastic result for the telescope design used. Congrats.
Also the filter used seems to be superiour to the Baader U-Filter for this purpose.
I wish Venus was around more often on my balcony side so i would also do some imaging on this.

That is an excellent picture, the cloud structure is really evident with very tiny details. Never got any real detail of venus with RGB filters and mak 180, I'm considering to try a combination of W47 filter + IR CUT. Good to know that there is a UV filter in the market that can afford such a great result.
