May 26 2023 Visual 540nm and iPhone imaging.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was from 14:15 until 15:00 UTC. The skies were a thinly clouded over milky white. The seeing was below average and the temperature was a cooler 60F ( 15.5C ).

Astro-Tech AT72EDII w/Altair wedge and Baader filter. 24x, 27x and 48x. ( 540nm )
I can see eight active regions on the photosphere today. Four in the northern hemisphere with three being labeled. Visually the line of spot groups in the NW quadrant appears as four but are listed as three. I think AR13311 is a dipole. The unlabeled one ( KSO ) is located in the NE quadrant.

The southern hemisphere also shows four active regions. Three of these are numbered on the KSO images with a patch of faculae in the SE lacking a number label.

The unnumbered active region in the NE Quad is seen only as a small spot. In the NW quadrant just across the CLM, AR13313 shows itself as an oval structured spot showing umbra and penumbra. Just WSW of AR13313 lies the eastern dipole of AR13311. I see it as three misshapen structured spots. Further WSW the western side of the AR13311 dipole is a collection of small spots and pores. One spot shows a tiny umbra with a fan shaped penumbra. AR13314 on the western tip of the line is seen as a structured spot with a few small spots and pores to its south and southeast.

The Spot of AR13310 is still large and shows it's umbra and penumbra easily. The edges of the umbra are somewhat ragged but I see no light bridges. A few pores lie just to it's north. I can see some mottling in the penumbra at 48x. AR13312, ESE of AR13310 is seen only as a large pore. I cannot see any of the tiny pores shown in the SDOHMI continuum 2K images. AR13315 in the SE quadrant, nearing the Central Longitudinal Meridian looks like a magnetically distorted dipolar region. It looks like one that could produce some serious flares! The large spots at each end are ragged and distorted with small spots stretched out between them. I can see some light bridging in the western spots of the dipole. Further east lies a spotless patch of faculae.

Despite the seeing and the hazy high clouds I could see the fine granulation of the photosphere. The wedge probably makes a difference here Vs the glass filter on the Orion70.

I took a single image using my iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

James

Very nice James! I will have try this. Do you just handhold the camera to the eyepiece?

Usually I just handhold the camera. But I do have a holder to mount the phone to the eyepiece. Just make sure you get the distance from the phone to the eyepiece correctly. It varies by eyepiece focal length and eye relief.

Very nice phone image Mr. Townley. You could probably sharpen it up a bit and rotate it in Photoshop. Phones won’t keep up with a dedicated astro camera but are always handy!
