May 14 2023 basic observation.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Around 17:00 UTC I managed a very quick 8x32 WL view through clouds in an otherwise overcast sky. A couple of hours later rain started. I could see the spots of AR13301, AR13302 and AR13305 in the NE quadrant. The temperature out is 70F ( 21.1C ). I am really glad I decided not to put off yesterday's imaging session until today.

I hope everyone here had a nice weekend and that all mothers here had a wonderful Mother's Day!

James

Thanks James! Yes, a nice weekend, we did an experiment - sunoculars with and without narrowband Oiii filters - more on the findings to follow when I get a bit of time.

Mark,
Did you ever post these findings?

I prefer the sunoculars without the OIII filters instead. With the filters there is a ghost image in the fov which is annoying, tilting the filters (to throw the reflections) alters their bandpass and tranmission, so you end up with slightly different colour views in each eye. The filters also reduce the binoculars ability to get a view through cloud in, which, I often get many cloudy views!

I'm tempted to try a pair of 10x42 eclipse smarts from celestron and compare against the lunts.

They should show a bit more detail than the Lunt 8x32 pair but will certainly require a tripod for close-study views.

I think triipod holding makes the world of difference. The SV50 on a tripod visually is excellent, but for imaging the rotating helical focuser is not ideal and the mylar filter is rather soft.

I'd prefer a 1.25" wedge anyday, but for quick views it makes a lovely setup and is very portable,

Mark,
Try sharpening it a bit using Smart Sharpen in Photoshop. Adjusting gamma or curves in PS may hep too.

It still looks good.

James.
