Attempt at Helium line 4th June 2023

Post by Alun_H »

Having read and followed the guide given by Douglas in regards imaging in the Helium D3 line https://groups.io/g/Solex-English/message/1032 I thought I'd have a go at it using my folded SHG yesterday morning. Used the thin line just above the Sodium D2 as mentioned in the guide as the starting point but I made things harder for me by choosing a larger ROI but after several attempts I eventually found the pixel shifted image which showed the faint Helium detail and created this gif using the D3 overlaid with the continuum image of the thin line I started with. Both images are single scans and I used IMPPG to align the images and Astrosurface to slightly process.

That's a very good attempt. Did you try playing around with subtracting, dividing, etc of the two images? I didn't have much luck with that but I'm actually not very good with Photoshop.

If you overexpose the surface, you can sometimes see some Helium prominences. But the Hydrogen proms have to be really big in order to see much in Helium. Once you find the correct pixel location for the Helium line, you can do a variety of things like stacking images and fiddling with the exposure.

Thank you Douglas,I did capture a prominence but the Protus image wasn't good enough to work with, next time I will try overexposing.
In regards subtracting I cannot fathom how to do it successfully in Photoshop (I only know the basic stuff) but I used the subtract tool in Astroart 8 and
here is the result

Astroart seems to do a really good job with that. Looks like a good method. I played with the levels a bit:

But the GIF method of display seems more "real" to me.
