The Saturn-M is great but I prefer the Grasshopper (CCD)

Thx for the comparison. So what are the differences on fd images? I wouldnt expect any.

Thanks Dennis

All cameras perform well with low gamma settings. When you increase gamma in CMOS cameras it is difficult to get good prom images. With CCD cameras you get much better results.

One could only tell if we could see stacked images before processing. I'd expect 533 to beat my 1600 on DR alone...and the photos here might evidence that.

The Saturn-M is better than the ASI1600 for h-alpha imaging. The dynamic range of these two cameras is not great though

Thx for the explanation, i wasnt aware about that.

Why would you raise gamma and not gain? You can always raise gamma in processing...am I missing something?

gamma = contrast, gain=sensitivity

I always use low gama settings for surface detail and middle to high gamma for proms

CMOS cameras have a low dynamic range and it is difficult to process prom images - high gamma

Pedro,

Thank you for making these interesting comparisons.

It might be easier to compare four images, side by side, with the same disk size. While avoiding degradation from digital enlargement.
Scrolling vertically requires visual memory. So it becomes much more subjective. Depending entirely on the skills/faculties/bias of the viewer.
Similarly, it becomes more difficult when making direct comparisons between different disk sizes. Some visual "gymnastics" are required here.
Though the latter was indeed a useful demonstration of the disk, image size with the four different cameras at the same, effective focal length.

Mine is a Firewire Grasshopper CCD camera ( GRAS 5055M-C. ). ( 2448x2048 resolution )

I also have a ZWO ASI178MM ( CMOS ) and a Firewire PGR Flea ( CCD ). The flea is a color camera.

You also have a wonderful SBIG camera that does wonderfully for deep-sky! The SBIG ha a CCD sensor, right?

Yes, the SBIG ST11000 has a Full Frame CCD and a second chip that can be used for self guiding

One trick I found to do comparisons is to open each image as a new tab in the browser, then switch from tab to tab. You get an instantaneous switch (something like a blink comparator).

Hm, but isnt it always available for processing manipulation later? I ask because I understood that manipulating it pre capture sort of narrows your processing wiggle-room. What am I missing?

I'm getting better results now (proms) if I increase gain. I tend now to use unity gain with CMOS cameras.
