Spectroheliograms 9th June

Post by Alun_H »

Using my Evostar 72ED with full aperture Hoya Pro ND16 filter,Sol'Ex/QHY5III 178M and EQ6 Pro/EQMOD to run off a few scans in the CaK and Hydrogen alpha lines (also did a Helium but yet to process). CaK image is a stack of 9 out of 12 scans and the Halpha 12 out of 15,stacked in Autostakkert and sharpened in IMPPG finishing in Photoshop CS2

The H-alpha turned out very well. I don't think you can get much better with 72mm aperture. I like the gentle processing.

The CaK looks like it was more difficult to process. Do you think it's focusing? Or the telescope itself? It is a pretty short focal ratio assuming you used it wide open.

Hi Alun,

Well done. Stretching a bit the midtones (from 1.0 to 2.0) in PS, brightens it a bit without burning details.

Thank you Douglas,I did omit mentioning I had reduced the aperture to 50mm for the CaK  ,maybe should have gone further though with a 40mm to bring the scope nearer f/10. In regards the processing I have been spending more time with IMPPG rather than Astrosurface and I must say it is growing on me.

Thank you Rainer, each time I tried brightening the levels the detail burnt out hence my leaving the image dark as I have, your additional processing has improved it :)

I have a CaK PST (a wonderful scope if you can still find one) and it is 40mm f/10. It has a very nice filter, better I think than what Lunt makes these days. I think bandwidth and optics matter more than aperture for CaK.

Have you tried refocusing the collimator for the H and K line ? For better precision the collimator should be reset each time you change the wavelength (the same way you do when you refocus the sun image on the slit when you go from H alpha to H or K line.

Fantastic work :bow :hamster: I think Rainer needs to give us all a tutorial on how to process CaK without burning the details, it's hard ;)
