Moon approaching Sun over corona before first contact

Post by george9 »

I went out to Utah to get the Moon in front of the corona, and here is an early shot. I have a lot of processing to do and to create a montage of the Moon approaching the Sun. But here is one shot with minimal processing with the Moon’s shadow coming in from the right before first contact. Just happened to be over a nice active region. Remember, the dark black thing in the middle is my cone. The Moon is the curved shadow to the right of that.

This is taken from Comb Ridge in SE Utah at 9:07 local time in my 50mm coronagraph (viewtopic.php?t=42685).

I have never been at the centerline of an annular before, and I found it a lot more moving than expected, best in the eclipse glasses. Just something about that perfect ring.

You may have to shift the image to the left to see the Moon on the right. Not sure why it didn't resize it. George

Fantastic image, George!

Did you this photo intentionally to show the moon on the corona background?

Very unique photo! A 100% SPOD !

That certainly is a very unique picture as I expect no one else was looking at the corona. Scientifically, this proves you are looking at the corona with your set up, as it would be impossible to see the Moon at this stage otherwise :bow :bow :bow

Thanks, all. Yes, I was hoping to get this shot. I have a series of images and hope to show the early progression. There was a haze, and I could not get negative shots to subtract, so it is limited how faint I can go on the corona.

George. You are the only one here that could image the moon before first contact. That is so awesome. I wonder if it could have been seen visually?

James.

I'm still staring at that image!

Imaging the Moon before first contact. That may be a first.

Just excellent!

Eric.

It would have been visible to the eye before first contact, but only as it got closer. That active region was visible before I attached the camera, so I would have seen it. The problem was that I had to choose between imaging and visual. It only takes a minute or two to switch, but that's long enough to disrupt the sequence of the Moon approaching. I should follow Klaus's example to allow switching with just a lever. The challenge is that my backfocus is limited, and now that I added a reducer in front of the camera, my backfocus is more limited. A bigger camera would help. I should use a Baader T2 Heavy Duty Quick Changer, although I am not sure I even have 15mm free.

Another shot at processing, from 15 minutes before first contact to one minute after. I used curves to try to highlight the Moon coming in better. You should be able to see the Moon in all seven images. You will probably need to click on the thumbnail to see it better.
