My 2024 eclipse experience

Post by ffellah »

Hi all: our 4 day trip to Montreal to see totality was not meant to be. Thursday night Lisa and I were packed and ready to fly Friday morning when I casually checked my Delta app to find out that out flight was canceled because of a big snow storm in Montreal. 10-15" of snow, 200,000 people with no power. We scrambled to rebook the flight next day, not to lose the prepaid hotel night less than 24 hours before checking in, all while not being able to talk to a human, only dealing with an AI program that was simulating a travel agent in India. :(

We wait 24 hours to fly on Air Canada only to find out at the last minute that this flight was canceled too due to lack of crew. They automatically re booked us on another United flight that afternoon: it all became too much stress and anxiety, so we canceled the entire trip.

So we set up an eclipse party in out front yard in Westport with some friends and neighbors: here the eclipse was between 90 and 91%. Weather was not cooperating for imaging, with fast moving clouds passing in front of the sun all the time. I was able to capture some images in the gaps, plus I set up the Seestar to capture a time lapse, clouds included. Below is a YouTube link.

In the end we had a wonderful time with friends and it all turned out well, but no totality.

Oh well !

Too bad about the trip but sometimes the unplanned events are the most fun and it looks like you had a good time! That time lapse by the Seestar is great, I wish I would have tried that with mine, don’t know why I didn’t think of it! My son had a great time watching from Ridgefield with his two little ones.

Oh Franco! my heart goes out to you, it must have been shattering. I hate airlines, they treat you like an insignificant object and not a human being who has other bookings. They just don't care. I had exactly the same for the 2017 eclipse and I hate Air Canada with a passion now. I cried all the way over the Atlantic because I had waited 20 years for that eclipse and I had booked my tickets 2 years in advance. Then they said at the airport they had overbooked the flight in the US and there was no seat for me, but I had paid for a seat and two years ago!! The hubby had a seat but not one for me!! They were willing to just dump me in Toronto all alone with no method of contact, separate us and fly me via Los Angeles a day later. I will never forget that, or forgive them.

I am so glad you saw the eclipse and enjoyed it with friends and family, I think this is the most important thing :bow :bow :bow

Thank you very much Kevin and Alexandra. I am sorry you went through the same thing, Alexandra: when things likes this happen , you are very helpless and cannot even talk a human. Travels is no fun anymore.

Hi Franco...

So sorry to hear that the weather ruined your expedition the way it did. I hadn't heard the snow caused that much trouble but there was more in the Montreal area than home (my daughter say we had 8 inches). Very unfortunate considering that some of the better sites were in the Eastern Townships and up to the Montreal area from what I understand.

Glad to see you manage dot get what you could form your home though...small consolation as it is :(

Good to see you made the best of a challenging/disappointing set of circumstances. Thoroughly enjoyed your Seestar timelapse,
