Slooh single and M7.25 Flare! 5-17-24

Post by DeepSolar64 »

May 17 2024 was a completely overcast day for me today with no break in the clouds to observe using my own equipment. I woke to a CME arrival alert from SpaceWeatherLive and thought, Hmm. maybe more aurorae. This resulted in G1 and G2 class activity a little later in the day. At 14:30 UTC I accessed Slooh and got only a single offband Ha image before it went offline. I think they purposely do offband shots at times to better show the spots since they lack a white light solar instrument. A bit later SWL alerted me to a strong M7.25 flare that occurred in AR13686 in the SE quadrant of the Sun. This one would have been a nice one to see or image but alas, clouds made it impossible.

Anyway, here's the data.

Hi James,

Very interesting but there seems to be a confusión about the M 7.25 flare in regard to the spot 3685 or 3686

Rainer,
Looking at the KSO Ha image from before the flare and comparing it to the flare images from SDO and the SWL notification image I think is indeed AR13685 and not AR13686. AR13676 is in the SW quad, not in the SE where the flare is. I don’t even see an AR13686 on the KSO image!

Good eyes!

James.
