Announcing new custom PHD2 version for solar tracking (beta)

Post by Eyeke2 »

Hello Solar Imaging Enthusiasts!
I've got something exciting for you!
I'm currently developing a custom version of PHD2 with new functionality for planetary tracking, particularly beneficial for solar and lunar imaging.
🌟 **About the Project**: This version aims to provide improved tracking accuracy for long-duration solar captures, making it potentially a helpful tool for observing and recording solar phenomena and eclipses.
👥 **Join the Beta Testing Group**: I invite you to join our private beta testing group, where you can access the latest builds, contribute to development discussions, and share your valuable feedback.
🔗 Join here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1320781201963513
This is a unique opportunity to be part of developing a tool that could enhance our solar imaging experiences. Your testing and input can make a real difference!
Looking forward to seeing you in the group.
Clear Skies,
Leo Shatz

This is a very meritorious act. I was hoping someone would do this PHD edit someday.
I wish you success in your work.

Since many solar astronomers use AltAz mounts, it would certainly be beneficial to be able to point these mounts with PHD2. Maybe PHD2 can do it, but I have a feeling it can't.

It's a good point about Alt/Az mounts. As a user of GE mounts, I haven't thought about it, but it's an interesting question. I've made many improvements to the PHD2 planetary tracking logic in the last month, including adding more features and stability improvements.

PHD2 was designed for GE mounts in mind, but using short exposures for solar or planetary imaging in general can help to reduce effects of the field rotation.

I had my first test with phd2.planetary this weekend, and it worked very well.
