CaK Full Disk and Post Flare Loops x2 15th May
Hi All.
Wednesday was a good day - the usual mid week meeting at the end of the day was cancelled and from being grey and rainy in the morning clear blue skies with great transparency prevailed. I was not hanging aroundand got home as quick as I could.
Long story short, I have eliminated all reflections in my double stack CaK filter, and now the way I tune it is by ramping the exposure up to 30ms and tuning until the proms are most pronounced. Imagine my surprise when I did this and saw post flare loops on both sides of the sun. A first for me, two at once, and another first, in CaK.
Anyway, here they are, taken 40mm f15 with the zwo183.

I would not have thought of double stacking Cal K.
I have a Lunt 1200 Module but have not used it for a long time.
Do you have a stand alone Cal K scope with a module in the rear?

Those are great. The proms are so clear and crisp. The colourised one is my preferred option here b/c I think it makes the proms stand out more vividly.

Thanks everyone for your kind words, I feel humbled.
To answer questions.
I have many scopes (so Mrs Townley tells me), and over time some have definitely migrated into CaK dedicated scopes - the ED80 (stopped to f15) I use for the full disks is very well corrected when stopped down and also high transparency. The 100mm Russian TaL and 127mm Bresser are also excellent, all are used stopped down. IMHO these cheap achromats at CaK perform better than my significantly more expensive LZOS 100/800 - more glass = less light and longer exposure time - not good in CaK.
The CaK module is of my own making, it uses an Alluxa and Chroma CaK filter. Both filters are tilted tuned; the primary filter (closest to the objective) is the Alluxa and this requires only a small amount of tilt to be on band. The secondary filter (closest to the camera) is tilted to be tuned and also throw the reflection away from the disk, as with an external double stack Ha setup. I had experimented with CaK PST filters in the setup, and while these hit the target specification of the filter better than the Alluxa or Chroma, it means they perform better with less tilt, and as such the ghost image is not thrown away from the disk when I use them double stacked. You also get some weird interference patterns. So the benefits of slightly tighter bandpass are negated by ghosting.
Once the ghost disk is thrown away from the 'actual' disk, and coupled with good sky transparency, the proms are easy, they are buried in the last couple of bits of data in the shadows, and require post processing to draw them out, but no different than with a DS Ha setup. Other key is out of band blocking, the more the better. The aim is for as good a signal to noise ratio as possible.
There is more to get out of the system yet - the mechanics of it all are cobbled together out of old extension tubes, filter holders and noses from barlows (minus the lenses). There is baffling and also blacking / flocking of the mechanics which will eek a bit more out. An iterative approach is the way forward.
Despite being imaged at f15 for full disk i'm getting an exposure time of 3ms, and even when I barlow up for closeups I'm keeping below 6ms with minimal gain. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how it compares against the new solar spectrum CaK etalons, I have a feeling I will have a lot more light to play with

How well does your homebuilt CaK filter do against a Lunt CaK module? I think yours probably has better contrast and shows the proms better. But I have never owned a Lunt module and am going by the images I see posted here.

The contrast is significantly higher and the proms much easier, i've played with a few Lunts over the years. The main difference is that it is tunable to get it on band. That's a superb images! As others said, your hard work on advancing the state of Ca imaging really shows.

Hi Kevin. It is a 1a Alluxa and a 1a Chroma, in reality both are wider than that though. Yes, I do use the RAF tilt tuner on the secondary filter to throw the reflection, it is too crude for the primary filter, for that I use the skybender filter tilter, it is considerably better in it's ability to accurately and repeatedly tune these filters. I modded the raf tilter, the brass thumbsrew that comes as standard adjusts the tilt when you screw it down so I replaced it with a lock nut.

Great Imaging Mark. Thank you for the supplementary information on your setup. I had a Lunt b1200 Cak module but I could never get decent results , I don't know if it was inexperience or poor seeing conditions, so I sold it.

Skywatcher 100mm F10 open frame refractor, 2" Antlia dual band ERF filter as a sub energy rejection filter, Flip Mirror to either a Baader TZ4 telecentric focal extender, Combo Quark Chromosphere, Naked PST etalon for double stacking, ASI74mm camera, or an Antlia 5a Cak filter, ASI290mm camera. 100mm aperture is stopped down to 50mm for Cak.
