Active Region 13664 in Ha 9th May 2024

Post by Carbon60 »

I've had my fingers crossed all morning hoping for clear skies and finally some gaps appeared shortly after lunch. I've been hoping for a view of the stunning active region for days now, but clouds and significant jobs around the home have prevented my from soaking up the excitement of the super large and super active group of sunspots. When the opportunity arose, I wasn't disappointed...the view really is stunning. I tried my best, with the conditions less than optimal, but good enough to capture the drama which unfolded between the clouds. The first image was taken at 13:08 UTC (presented in mono and colour) and the second image was taken just 15 minutes later at 13:23 UTC mid-flare (M-class I think). The flare was short lived, but exciting to see, nevertheless.

I'm still sitting outside in my garden at the time of writing, waiting for yet more clouds to pass. I'm hoping for another another view before the end of the day.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

These are wonderful. I always look forward to your images Stu and hope you get some clear weather this spring.
Interesting the dark lines leading upward in the area bottom left of center. Like vertical parallel mini-proms. Are they spicules?

Thanks, David.
These dark lines are certainly interesting features. They are small filaments (yes, mini proms if seen on the limb).
