New SolEx user first photos

Post by stefanoaz »

These are my first photos with proper equipment, after I made some tests with a guide scope to help me see how much I would have to upgrade the mount and optics. I tried best practices to prepare the SolEx: I focused the SolEx camera train on a star and locked it, and then made the collimator adjustment for edge sharpness the next morning.

These were taken this morning May 23. Using a Herschel wedge, I chose an 8x slew rate to be oversampled - (20x would have left me undersampled.) Prominences in the H𝛂 seem to agree with the NSO photos. I have included a Doppler "tomographic" movie from jSolEx showing approaching and receding plasma from an active region - it's compressed so as not to abuse BBS storage. This is a cool feature Cédric has included in the new version of his code.

There's much practice I need on my technique with the SolEx - it's a splendid thing Christian and friends have done.

Thanks Alexandra

Have you taken some photos? I think my favorite piece of gear is the new AM5 mount - it's portable and easy to set up. A tad pricey, but it will be the only mount I'll ever need. Completely different experience from the old CG5 mount that was heavy and hard to set up in a light polluted sky like we have. And here in Phoenix we're blessed with clear skies, (and cursed with a hellish summer)......
