Animation of Post Flare Loops in Ha and CaK 5/27/2024

Post by rigel123 »

Great activity, not the greatest conditions but I'm not complaining. It was supposed to be cloudy and rainy all morning and the storms came early and I awoke to fairly clear skies with a few clouds. When I set up I immediately noticed the post flare loops on the SE Limb so quickly grabbed a full disk and then started a capture for the animation. Unfortunately, the clouds returned and stopped me after 30 minutes with Ha. So I decided to switch to my CaK set up with the Orion ED80T and Lunt BF1200 CaK just to see if I could get a shot of the loops in CaK as well. I could, and then the clouds parted and I started another capture for an animation which lasted a whopping 6 minutes! But you can see motion! After that the clouds decided they wanted to stick around so here is what I was able to capture. A bit of haze after all so a bit noisy pulling out the details but still not too bad. The Ha looks a bit funky on the full disk for the manipulation to pull out the loops as well as overlaying the disk onto that image. Couldn't quite get the background I wanted.

Thanks James and Franco! It was awesome to watch it develop on the laptop screen but I’m really glad there is no soundtrack capturing my expletives when the clouds would start to obliterate the view!
