X2.9 Flare & Coronal Rain in CaK 27th May

Post by marktownley »

Hi All.

I was out this morning trying to image in CaK in between the fast scudding clouds when I got an alert for the X2.9 flare. Took me a few seconds hunting round before I realised it was on the limb, but it was awe inspiring! I only had 5 mins before I was completely clouded out, but, as you can see a lot happens in 5 minutes on the sun! Taken at 66mm f15, with a 2x cemax and the zwo290mm.

Awesome Mark! That was about the same amount of time I got on my CaK animation! Yours is a tad sharper! ;)

Fantastic capture Mark. You have really upped the Ca prominence standard.
Was this the SE limb? AR3664 coming around?

Thats an amazing capture Mark. Those flare loops are sharp. Great work

Thanks everyone, appreciate the comments. Rain today, but i'm on the boat rewiring some 12 volt systems and giving the battery bank annual maintenance. Anyway, here's a couple of images from the same time from just before the flare alert, seeing wasn't great, but it was better than todays grey skies!

Great stuff. The proms coming over the brow - its like a song "what's that coming over the hill, is it a monster, is it a monster" Will it bring aurorae this time?

Love the animation.
It must be so satisfying to make your own equipment, spot imperfections, know how to correct them and then get a fantastic result like this.
