Great image! What kind of setup did you use to get these details? Curious, because I'm just going up in aperture :)

 Thank you for your feedback all and your interest Pedro and AndrevdHoeven. The kit used is
Tecnosky 125/975 F7.8 OWL
Baader Photographic Herschel Prism with Altair Astro G Band Filter and ND 0.6
ASI462MM in an Antares 1.25" extension tube 2" long with a Cemax 2x cell screwed in (chance new discovery giving about 3x mag)
Hinode Solar Guider
Celestron AVX
Best 100 frames of 3892 (60 seconds) fps 64 exp 0.14ms gain 121 hist 80%

Why have the gain at 121 I hear you cry... well it was because being of middle years I forgot the number the gain had to be at for this particular sensor where the noise suddenly drops and the dynamic range suddenly increases. It needs to be 80-100 really to capture the cleanest low noise images. So I',ve usually settled on 100 but on this day my mind magically changed it to 120 for no reason know to self! So am I an expert on cameras? No, am I heckers like, I didn't understand the magic feature and so FLO kindly explained it to me!

Here, I've been 'colouring in'
Best wishes,
Nic

Hi Nic, great image and processing!

With the high gain for low readout noise idk.. i think that only benefits night time long exposure images. In solar imaging you want to have the lowest gain setting possible with a exposure time of 2-3ms. This will result in the highest signal and you can stack less images. But im curious to learn something if im wrong here.

Thanks all and thanks for your interest and suggestion Dennis. I don’t know either so decided to trust their advice until I learn any different. Here’s the info attached,

How lovely, that’s made my day, thank you.
I have to say that this success is a team success. I’ve learned the skills to create this image through being a member of solarchat, getting advice from the forum, reading others posts and importantly seeing images on solarchat which have inspired me to keep learning. Here’s a cheer for all of you and a spray of shaken champagne!
Thank you my lovely friends,
Nic

Nic that is a fantastic image! I am new to solar imaging and solarchat and yes that is the stuff of dreams. I am currently imaging CaK and WL with the 462 and paid absolutely no attention to the graphs. I will be changing my practice after reading this post. Thanks so much and CS.

Thank you, just before you do… please look again at the link from the original post as there seems to be an alternative view for solar where this principle may not apply!
Good luck with it and I’ll keep an eye out for your posts,

Hi Nic...

An awesome image of that magnificent AR...excellent work :bow

On the subject of the gain setting, I typically run the ZWO cameras at the Unity Gain setting...which for this camera is 90. I have the same one and I too sometimes will have the gain set higher...usually after bumping it up to allow shorter exposures to focus and then neglect to re-set it :o

Thanks Brian. I tried it yesterday without gain but only a couple of times as I was fighting with cloud. It feels like the results weren’t quite so good but I realise that could be different seeing conditions and also the spot I’m comparing is nearer the limb so the granulation is disappearing therefore not a fair comparison at all. Next session, I’ll do some with no gain, some at 85 (a little over the obligatory 80) and some at 125 (a little over the level that caught me the shot of a lifetime!)
Not that long til our birthday now…
Nic
