Processing Solar Proms Autostakkert 3 vs Registax 6

Post by Jordan Konisky »

I have read several reviews that state that Registax outperforms Autostakkert in stacking videos of solar prominences, Is that the general view of folks who follow Solar Chat? If yes, is this conclusion solely based on personal experiences using these software or is there an explanation based on differences in the software itself? Or both? Looking forward to your opinion.

Jordan,
I use AS3! For stacking and ImPPG for tweaking the image.
I seems to me more capable than the RG6 wavelets....

I use Autostakkert 3 for all surface and full disc stacking and ImPPG for sharpening.

ASK3 is far superior to ASK2 for prominence stacking. I found that ASK2 failed on a prominence 95% of the time. I would say that ASK3 fails about 30% of the time, so this version is much improved. I always use ASK3 first then if it fails I fall back to stacking in Registax 6. However I always sharpen in ImPPG, never use Registax wavelets.

I originally did tests in ASK2 and the spicule edge was very poor compared to Registax. However ASK3 is very much improved and when it does work it does a fair job quite similar to Registax.

I always keep my options open.

And I still use AviStack 2 (for those cases where Stackistry fails). Seems OK on prominences too.

My software:
Stackistry — an open-source cross-platform image stacker
ImPPG — stack post-processing and animation alignment

Hello, Montana and others,
Thanks for you response to my query. What do you mean by an AS3 failure? How do you know when a stacking operation has failed? And how do you set your alignment points for a prom stacking. Just a few manual AP's over the prom or something more?

I only ever use AS3 and ImPPG.

You know when it has failed because your stacked image is a complete mess, a jumble of rubbish :)

I only ever use the automatic alignment points but change the brightness at which they are set so that I get coverage on the area that want and not on blown out areas of the disc.

Just try it and see, spend an afternoon and keep fiddling until you are happy :) there isn't really much to change in ASK3, it is a great program. By using it you will gain more confidence.

Thank you Alexandra and the rest of you for responding so well to my questions. I so appreciate your willingness and patience in helping those of us new to solar photography. My next task is to learn how to combine prom and surface images into a single image. Looks like a lot of information out there on various ways to accomplish these combined images. I may well be back on Solar Chat seeking advice. Off course what would be most helpful would be for Sol to wake up and welcome cycle 25. Best wishes to all for the new year.
