Hello and first post here. I need some help. I bought a SM3 90mm scope with a BF15 earlier this month. I decided to go ahead and also order a replacement ITF from Oliver at BelOptik in Germany. Then I decided to inspect the ITF in my current BF15 and found no rust but the diagonal flat appeared to have a coating issue after posting on another site. I asked for a replacement and Meade had one sent to me in two days. At the same time I ordered a SM2 variant BF15 from Woodland Hills site in California. Both came in the same day and I disassembled them all to compare. These are the photos. It appears the free replacement on the far left is identical to the original in the middle, but the SM2 type doesn't look anything like the other two. I did have a chance to compare views today and saw no apparent difference. My question is: Does anyone recognize this and could someone with a SolarMax 3 scope and BF take theirs apart and see if their flat looks like this?

Thank you so much for the help!
Graham

Yuck! Those mirrors look filthy, does the detritus come off?

nothing you can do about those mirrors to fix them and i beleive it is a problem with all bf15’s from coronado because mine is the same.

My personal advice is to return it immediatley and purchase a lunt blocking filter

The mirror was designed to repel all uv and far infrared light for solar purposes,

In my instance the beloptik filter and bf15 alone are not safe for visual use, You will lose color cones in your vision.

Could you hold your 15mm filter/ bf15 up to a lamp, and show us a photo of the light coming through? If it is orange you require additional filtration for safety. some of them let through a ton of yellow and green light.

Pretty sure these are like Bob Y. advised me..grossly deteriorated dielectric coatings.
I removed the flats and shined a flashlight through the back, which is black. You can clearly see the deterioration. On a good note I had a good flat that I placed in the new diagonal. This with the Beloptik ITF should be a rust free and up to standard blocking filter to observe with I hope. Since this condition appears to be new and no one has talked about it, I think all should be warned. If I hadn't spent 700 dollars extra for another I would've been stuck with a substandard filter. I appreciate the fellow above checking his. I'm new to this site but have met Steven one time at my old club. Was hoping he would chime in. Again everyone should be aware of this defect although I'm unsure of the product from such coating failure.

i advise you to look through the circular filter in the eyepiece port alone in your lamp, this is equally important.

The beloptik filter while it is well trusted, will not on its own protect your eyesight. IF the coronado 15mm filter in the eyepiece is letting any other colors through you may regret it for the rest of your life.

You are relying on the coronado supplied objective mounted ERF, plus the beloptik filter to work together with your SM2 mirror to prevent damaging rays from exiting the 15mm filter in the eyepiece.

Lunt filters are guaranteed for almost every sale to have every piece inspected and pass a tested as safe protocol.

, coronado filters are well known to be extremely faulty and their safety or even build could be counterfeit.

if the 15mm eyepiece filter is showing anything other than a pure red color, do not use it. Some people are color blind to this, which is why i do suggest posting an image so others can confirm that it is indeed red.

I will check tomorrow. I get your point now. I have three to test. You mean the 6A sub nanometer filter on the eyepiece side. Understood and thank you. Will post results.

and for third reference that hydrogen alpha third party filters are typically not what they claim to be;

here is the beloptik filter transmitting the same green stuff..

When you own a Coronado this is disturbing! I have not noticed anything odd with mine but I am certainly nervous now. I am a bit afraid to take my BF15 apart to look at it. The view is nice and red through the scope.

I was very new to Ha solar astronomy when I bought my scope. If I did it again with what I know now I would certainly go Lunt.

It appears all sub 6A filters look the same, so I did not post pics of them, but do have them if you want. They appear to leak green/yellow light when compared to the ZWO CCD Ha filter. All ITFs are sealed around the edge. None appear to have rust. After comments I do wonder if I can optimize my scope further by utilizing the CCD filter? Also, I do have a 2" Baader UV/IR mounted filter that I am not using. The Beloptik ITF has yet to arrive. Been almost three weeks now. What do you all think?

Assuming the objective mounted coronado 3 erf is what it is supposed to be, the only sure safe bet is a baader planetarium d-erf filter. The objective erf repels all color except red, and minimalizes ir/uv light.

Assuming your sm2 mirror only shoots out the color red onto your 15mm blocker everything is expected to be safe. The mirror is designed to repel residual uv and infrared coming out of the itf that may have passed through the eyalon.

Assuming the coronado oem itf filter is indeed what it claims to be you should be fine. Mine came wth the same itf so i can confirm this at the very least. The itf is designed to further eliminate ir/uv and all other colors that may have gotten passed the etalon.

The baader planetarium d-erf filter is designed for the sun, and has many users safely relying on it from passing anything harmful through the etalon.

But, in the end who are you going to trust more? Made in mexico/china. Made in germany, or made in usa.

The beloptik filter is made in china i do believe, or at least the tissue with all the kanji it was wrapped in was. When paired with your coronado objective erf it is expected to be fully safe.
