Radio meteor detection of the Draconids (October 2020)

Post by Carbon60 »

Not as dramatic (or convincing) as the Perseids, especially given that this year's display was very 'thin' as Earth passed through a substantial void in the cloud that gives rise to the Draconids (parent body being the periodic comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner). Nevertheless there does appear to be a slight uptick in the meteor detection rate using reflected radio from the GRAVES transmitter in France. The background (or base rate) is around 10-15 'contacts' per hour. These arise substantially from 'sporadic' meteors that hit Earth's atmosphere randomly all the time.

Here are the data:

Compare with the Perseids back in August.....

Later this month we can expect the Orionids which should peak on October 19-20, so it will be interesting to see how the chart evolves during this period.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Another excellent presentation :hamster: I can tell you are very good at the art of spotting astronomical events through clouds :)
