Radio Detected Geminids December 2020-UPDATED (2)

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi everyone,

The Geminids are about to peak over the next couple of days. If you've got clear skies you should take a look outside over night as my radio detector is starting to show a significant increase in the number of detected events. I'm seeing an increase from the usual background sporadic events at around 10 per hour to over 100 counts per hour as of last night, and is set to rise higher still.

Here's the plot...

and a screen shot of a strong detection....

More data to come over the next few days.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Hi Stu,

Excellent. I got yesterday at about 12 UTC or 6 am local time 407 strikes. Let us see how many I get tomorrow.

My friend got a maximum of 214 at the same time 12 UTC or 6 am local time on the morning of December 12 but his PC shut down and he did not notice it until noon today ... Bad Luck ...

Hi Stu,

Excellent. I have always wondered why the guys of rmob.org do not post the local time colorgramm as everywhere they say the best time to look at meteors is in the dawn for example. If the colorgramm would be local time the comparison would be much easier ...

I understand UTC is the Holy Grail time for astronomers but in this case ... ¿?

I completely agree with you, Rainer. It would be easier to compare if the results were presented in local time.

Here's an update on the Geminids, as detected in my back yard here in the UK, using radio reflections from the GRAVES transmitter in France.
Geminids3_December 2020.jpg

I was surprised at how quickly the rate dropped off after the peak on December 14th. The build-up was slower, lasting a couple of days, but the end appears to have been very rapid, with relatively few events counted (over and above the usual background levels) on the 15th.

Next up will be the Quadrantids in January.....

Thanks for looking.

Hi Stu,

Yes, that also draw my attention at how quickly the rate went into low numbers.

While I am sitting in my Observatory I have the loudspeaker running and listening to the Space Music

I'll throw my 5 nights of Geminids into the mix for what they're worth.
I was afraid I'd just missed the max when I powered up for the 13th to 14th session, but looking at Stu's graphics, think I got lucky and just caught it.
Regards to all,
Les
