Professionals coat their mirrors in gold for infrared use. It surprised me that the gold coating put on lenses would work so well in the ultraviolet. The upcoming James Webb 6.5m space telescope has a gold-coated segmented mirror optimized for IR use though it can see up into the orange region of the spectrum.

I did not know the Coronado CaK PST had a gold coated objective. To the best of my knowledge the objective of the Ha version has a blue coating. Probably at least in part magnesium fluoride. A gold coating would then make sense because CaK is very close to the beginning of the ultraviolet range.

In the long run it is cheaper to cannibalize parts from old goods._justapictureposter
I agree and it's a great way to recycle!
