G1 Geomagnetic Storms 15-17th April 2021-Updated

Post by Carbon60 »

These past few days have seen the arrival of two G1 class geomagnetic storms. Although on the scale of things (G5 is the highest class) a G1 storm is only mildly geoeffective, it often produces beautiful aurorae.

Easily detected on my magnetometer here in the UK, the storms produced some nice responses, as can be seen on my chart below.

This is an ongoing event as Earth remains within fast flowing solar wind emanating from a coronal hole. Stay tuned for more data over the next day or two.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Good record Stu! Saw quite a few pictures of aurora seen in the UK as a result of this storm.

Excellent news, Aaron. I've still to see a proper aurora myself (I saw a weak one from an aeroplane once) so I'm looking forward to being able to move around again and travel to Norway/Iceland when the conditions are favourable. STEVE must have been a superb bonus for you.

Thanks for your comments.

Mark also. Glad you like my data.

Actually, here's an update from this afternoon, more by way of closing out this particular encounter with the solar wind.

It looks like things have quietened down, at least for the time being. We just need some Earth directed CMEs to make things a little more exciting.

That's a great set of data Stuart, so it seems even a mild G1 can be a fabulous sight from the ground :hamster:

Hi Alexandra,

Apparently so, especially at this time of the year. The equinoxes are peak times to see the Aurora even with mild solar storms.

The Russell-McPherron effect is on our side at the moment for a lil' while longer, when that dies back we should have NLC back on the scene again :)
