Attached Image Size on Posts

Post by marktownley »

Hi All,

If you are uploading images directly to the forum, rather than using a hosting site eg flickr etc, can you try and keep file sizes to a minimum please. If you have large file sizes, above a couple of Mb please consider displaying these via a hosting site, such as flickr etc.

Apart from it being slow for users to see images as they 'load', the forum host, Stephen, has to pay for the server space we use, the more Mb the more $$$ the server costs to run.

As we run out of server space, and the project does not have the $$$ to pay for more server space then we have to delete old uploads, which given the wealth of information on here is a real shame. This often has the consequence of losing a context to a post.

Thanks folks!

Mark

Thanks for the head's up on this snag Mark.

I would have thought that the use of JPEG's compresses sufficiently without losing any amount of detail, compared to other formats and of course saving not only the server-space, but also as you say about the slow-downloading of images on SolarChat being much quicker if 2Mb or less for us to view...

I will certainly be keeping an eye on any uploads I send to SolarChat, as well as reducing some images - as necessary...

Terry

Hey, Mark,
Since I have started imaging this is certainly of relevance to me. Can you use Dropbox as a hosting site? I do have a Dropbox subscription. I have also considered Astrobin.

Bruce, thanks for the offer. The current attachment/database size on this forum is over 40GB...GIGAbytes. I am not aware of any way to share dropbox stored images automatically on this forum or how to have uploaded images sent to a dropbox. Since everyone already has at least 5GB of free storage space on dropbox, if there is a way to do that, please enlighten our users on how. :)

Just a note, the internet is incapable of displaying images over 72ppi and you are not getting any advantage by sharing a gigantic .tif vs a compressed jpg other than the ability to zoom in closer in the image and still maintain the 72ppi resolution without degradation.

I've always tried to have zero size or length restrictions on posts here and we rely on common sense that someone won't post a 300MB+ image, although there are many here...lol

Like I have noted many times before, we are way beyond the size limits that any of this software was designed to handle and we are also way past the allotted maximum database size for a forum on our host Network Solutions. I currently pay for 2 hosting packages in order to handle the size. This is not a normal setup and I have no idea if this forum will work tomorrow or the next day although it has done a pretty good job for almost a decade.

If you are using this forum as a repository for your images, I can guarantee that you will lose them at some point so maybe find a better way for storage.

We will just keep it going as long as it lasts and as long as the nonprofit is funded but I don't guarantee anything. :)

Hi Stephen,

The resolution of an image in DPI is totally irrelevant. DPI is meant for printing and does not influence the size of an image displayed on a monitor.

An image of 1500 x 1000 pixels with 1 dpi setting or 500 dpi setting will always look the same on a monitor but if you go to your printer with that image the first image with 1 dpi setting will print out at a size of 1500" x 1000" (Huge Billboard) and in the second case it will print out like a postal stamp with a size of 3" x 2".

A big problem is the difference between uploading an image here in *.png or *.bmp format compared to a *.jpg image.

A 100% JPG image is about 2 or 3 times smaller then the same image in PNG format, Same applies for a BMP image. In no case you will see a better image using PNG or BMP compared to the same image in JPG format.

BTW, a monitor's resolution in dpi can be calculated by dividing one measurement, be it vertical or horizontal. e.g. my monitors have 597 mm horizontal size and display 2560 pixels and so my monitor dpi is ~109.

Again dpi is meaningless when presenting an image on a Monitor as monitors display pixel by pixel and do not care about dpi.

dpi means dots per inch or drops per inch. When printing an image profesionally the printers want from you 300 dpi for a good resolution in the printing. If you would deliver an image with 25.4 dpi then ead ink drop would have the size of 1mm and the printing result would be awful.

Also when printing a book, or a calendar the offset printer want to have 300 dpi due to quality reasons.

Below the same image, one time at 1 dpi at 2108x2104 pixels and then at 500 dpi at 2108 x 2104 pixels. Both images at no JPG compression e.g. 100% have 978 kb and the same image saved as PNG has 2097 kb and looking at the image you see no quality difference at all

I always thought DPI applied to printers only also. Good point Rainer. Pixel count and file type should be more relevant to file size. I try to use .jpg files whenever possible. TIFF, .png and .bmp files tend to be too big.

Yes, I agree with Rainer's definitions, whilst ultimately, it is the size of the images in either Kb's or Mb's - as sent over the internet and subsequently recorded on the server/hosting environment which will affect the cost of paying for that hosting..

Of course whilst TIFF's/PNG's etc., may well show a tad more detail on a user's own screen (prior to internet-transmission), reducing the ultimate-size to JPEG compression and saving the Mb's for transmission to SolarChat, does not make a significant amount of difference to the image-quality for the end-users/us - to see, which really does apply to Solar-imagery.

I have done some work with this type of scenario in the past, where I was getting images of several Megabytes of an image of aircraft as being received as a TIFF or even a RAW format. I reduced such images to JPEG and sent them back to the sender, where it was agreed that only a small degradation was found against the original image and not enough to use such large amounts of internet-usage (including my own storage-space on one of my own computers)...

Terry

I just did some maintenance on the forum and found over half a gigabyte of orphaned image attachments in the forum storage folders. These are images that were uploaded but never posted for whatever reason.
Here are the stats after a massive cleanup.

Hi Stephen,

It is the same. Be it PPI or DPI does not matter when presenting images.

Just think about it. The PPI of your monitor is fixed and not variable as the PPI or DPI of a printer.

What matters is the size of the image in pixels and the compression you apply in JPG.

There has been a lot of urban myths around all this due to marketing in the same way as people thought that a 100mm lens converts in a 160 mm lens due to the misunderstood crop factor ... OFF TOPIC

The same still applies when people say my monitor resolution is 2560 x 1440 pixels ...but OK also OFF TOPIC

OK, so I have put an image on Flickr a copy of which was attached to a recent post of mine as an experiment.
I then edited my Solar chat post to add a link to the original image.
Then it occurred to me that if there is not some form of thumbnail that links to the external image it would be
less than inviting.
It seems stupid to upload an image to Solarchat and have an external link, so what is the best way for viewers
to get a preview of the full size image ?

Thanks Alexandra, but not quite what I was looking for ( unless I was doing it wrong )..
You can also just right click on a Flickr image and copy and paste the URL straight into the SolarChat post, but
that just shows as a clickable link on SolarChat.
I wanted somehow to have a visible image/thumbnail of the image that went to Flickr when you clicked on it.

I was proposing only that I would finance the Dropbox. Solarchat or CBSAP would be the owner. In other words, I would make a donation and an admin here would manage the Dropbox account. But I don't know how to link images to here from Dropbox either or if it's even possible. My concern was more about sharing captures. A single video file from my QHY163 is often 32GB. We don't want to put something like that on this site. So I guess we're talking about different purposes - limiting the size of images that you want to show to the whole group vs. allowing the sharing of large files between individuals or a few members.

I think that Alexandra is quite right. Flicker contains the image on their servers. So a user on SCF can merely point their image their. I can''t recall what their file size limit is. If SCF members get a Flickr account, they can host their own images. Although they may have to pay for an increased file limits.
Astrobin also host files but the member would have to pay a fee for that.
Dropbox also work like astrobin, but the amount of files space is considerably larger..

I suppose SCF could fund a common repository which could be hosted by Flickr or by Dropbox/Astrobin or a combination of them.
Someone could get all the information together; it should not be that expensive.

Flickr could have the advantage that the image is also displayed on the page without it costing SCF server space.

Sun on 29th April 2021 sunrise: Dropbox test

Post by Radon86 »

Hi All !
I tested my mobile setup again in my backgarden. Sunrise was 4.34 UT and I could see the sun easily from around 0500 UT from the first floor of my house. I setup my 60mm guidescope-Quark at around 0600 UT and maaged to get sun on visual by about 0615 as it was just emerging from the corner of my neighbours roof.
Seeing the sun was not bad really, although Meteoblue gave an seeing scale of 1.86 arcsecs, but seeing index2 was only 1 (the worst). I could see some detail, the main AR sunspot cluster, the proms on the top western edge near the north and a few filaments ok, the limb looked clear.

Here is what I saw (but from the NSO site). I am just testing the Dropbox facility. I am adding the link only, so so extra burden on SCF (maybe I should write less as well !)

If everyone uses Dropbox (basic free account gives you 2 GB), and if you pay a modest amount, you can get 2 Terabytes which should be enough for most of us.
Could this be a solution for SCF ?

Magnus

You can right click on the Link, and choose - Open in New window or tab, so you can still continue in SCF forum afterwards.

What is the modest amount for Dropbox that you refer to ??

Perhaps it would be far-easier and better to donate the same amount once per year to SolarChat as well as keeping everything in one place ??
If everyone here did just that, then the advantages of SolarChat would be much easier and secure too...

Hi Terry,

https://www.dropbox.com/plans?tab=work& ... r#features

16.58 gbp per month (Professional) - 3 TB
So maybe not that modest ?

Hello Magnus, thanks for the reply, but say for £8 per month x 12-months = £96 per annum, looks to me that, sending £100 as a donation to Solarchat once per year, is less of an arrangement into one's bank-account, which can so easily go wrong (and often does) !!!

Without any extra Log-in's/Passwords and a "all-in-one-location", would be a far-better resolution and say for just 100 of our SolarChatters sending such a donation - would equate to £10,000 towards Stephen Ramsden, being able to continue to run SolarChat as is. That's nearly half of the required funding required from just SolarChatters alone...

I prefer a simple and easy life to do what has been an excellent example of having the "all-in-one" posting/imaging/replies, questions and seeing answers in the one website, such as SolarChat...

Cheers
Terry

Hi,

I have a forum in Mexico and pay for a 3 year plan with " Unlimited Storage " US $ 360.00 for a 3 years period ... US $ 360-00 ~ £ 260.00 (~ £ 90 / year )

The only thing is to move the domain and the whole database to the new forum. For an experienced IT person in databases this is a job of about 30 -60 minutes.

I am hosting at www.bluehost.com ( I do not get a commission ) and I guess there are many other hosting service providers who have a good plans ... just a question of searching and comparing ..

Just my £ 0.02 pee and IMHO ...

These "other" image hosting sites keep demanding my "inside leg measurement" in exchange for showing me a single image. Facebook, newspapers, magazines and others demand repeatedly that I sign in to see images placed there by other creative people than themselves.

They obviously all hate ad-blocks. Advertising now being the sole, flimsy foundation to the whole, tottering edifice we now call The Internet.

Google is charging me monthly for hosting my everyday photos. Even then I had to accept reduced size rather than original quality. The difference in image quality is obvious to me. Even on a normal HD screen. Meanwhile the Backup and Sync symbol churns endlessly on my screen. It takes ages for the Photos website to wake up and show me my own collection rather than a completely blank screen. I do have a fast 200Mbps fibre connection. So it isn't that. No idea if it can be made to share individual images without breaking anything.

Relevance in this context? Probably none.

like eGray said above, if just 1% of the users of this forum and the Facebook group page donated around $100US yearly, we could not only completely fund the entire budget of our nonprofit in 28 countries but also pay for unlimited storage of everything forever. lol

But, alas, that is not the way things ever work out so we do the best with what we have.

Hi
My fault for not being clear.

I have an Astrobin account and I post my images there.
What I would like to do is share my images here.
Cheers Steve

If you open Filip's animation in a new tab it looks like it is linked from astrobin.

Maybe you could PM him and ask? or ask on the thread.

The easiest way Steve, would be to open a "New Topic" in the "This is SolarChat" page.

Then enter your "Subject" preferably with a date of image(s) when acquired - for every-bodies ease of search.

Enter you text relating to your captures in the big oblong-box.

Go to "Full Editor Preview" or go to "Attachments" below the big oblong box and then "Add files" ...
Usually, this will take you to your desktop-page and show images that you may or could put on your desktop that you wish to post on SolarChat.

Then simply "Open" the file/image(s) that you wish to post.

It/they will show-up in the "FILENAME" section below the big oblong box (with options).

Then good idea to use the "Preview" tab to check all your entry and your pic(s) are correct.

If so, then "Submit" and await for your post to appear on that screen in light-blue. (may take a a few seconds)
If not shown then repeat the "Submit" procedure, as maybe more than one poster at the same, stops your post.

A reminder, that please only post as JPEG's as others may not be accepted, with an image-size limit of 2Mbyte per image and preferably small Mbytes of say up to no more than 1Mbyte each, as sufficient detail is easily seen by the viewers at even 200Kbytes approximately.

This is to conserve SolarChat's need to avoid having to apply paying-adverts from other sources due to the cost for this charity site - where over many-years there is a massive amount of data stored, which some may have to be lost due to maximum storage-space available at present... Thank you...

Terry

From your Astrobin account, you simply click on the Share button above the picture you want to post, then you can select to share for a forum mode, copy that link and then paste it into your post. It will not post the full image but will include a link and a thumbnail image to click on.
