CME Impact 12th May 2021-UPDATED

Post by Carbon60 »

A CME impact from a solar eruption a few days ago arrived this morning at a little after 6:00am UT creating an ongoing geomagnetic storm. This was easily detected on my magnetometer here in the UK.

If this continues to ripple through Earth's orbital path, it should be a good night for aurora watchers.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Wow... I'll take another look at my data to update it. Dark and clear :)

Here's the full event. I've added some planetary Kp index data and solar wind magnetic polarity data from NOAA to show how all of these are interrelated. As the Bz component (red line) turns south (negative) so the magnetic field carried by the solar wind plasma links up with Earth's magnetic field lines. This allows charged particles (protons and electrons) to penetrate deeper into Earth's upper atmosphere, creating a geomagnetic storm. The more negative Bz is, the greater the effect. This CME created a G3 geomagnetic storm at its peak. This is indicated using the Kp index (planetary K index) which ranges 0-9 and is a measure of geomagnetic disturbance. More information on this can be found here...https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/planetary-k-index

Looks like the Aurora alert was a bit late coming at 6pm, looks like the peak was earlier at around 12-3pm. Still no good as daylight hours, would have been good for the penguins in Antarctica though :)
