Prom in SE 16 May, sketch

Post by viewer »

Hi!
Clear day, 13C (warmer on the balcony), seeing average. PST, 17-50x. Red pastel pen and blending stump. Thought about blending in some orange, but in 20 minutes the shape had already changed, you almost need to get prom sketches done in 10!

Very nice! I love the color you have used. Very natural. And yes they do change fast!

Thanks to you all! This confirms color is the way to go, red that is. White light observing is a different story, then black means "not white". But the H-alpha window is red, the chromosphere and prominences are dominantly red, as seen during solar eclipses. I may experiment with different hues of red-purple-orange, but red, not black for prominences is the way to go.

Thanks to all of you, really feeling encouraged to go forward!

One thing I'm thinking about is the limb, there are some irregularities, probably the density and height of fibrils. GONG images are auto-processed, and I think that shows a bit unfavorably on the limb, so may try to capture also the visual prominence free limb next time.

I enjoy your sketches and am tempted to try this sometime. There’s a real appeal to the purely visual approach as opposed to imaging. It’s the reason I haven’t tried any nighttime imaging yet. It’s just too enjoyable being at the eyepiece under the stars without all the equipment problems!
Cheers.
Peter

Thanks, something tells me to have a "low-tech" approach, just sitting there sketching, maybe I'm feeling some potential. As a contrast I do also enjoy to watch utter hi-tech when it comes to images. It's realism in different ways.

Superb!!! :hamster: :bow

When I have sketched proms you have to be fast, I have done sequences before now as they change shape. Sketch fast and do the finishing artistic touches in afterwards.

For those more active prominences, I'd say even 2-3 minutes.

When you have time, I'd suggest observing for 0,5-1 h and making a few sketches in a row. I once saw a short time lapse made this way, a very interesting view indeed.
