Lunt Anti-Reflex Filter

Post by rray6 »

Hello All,
I've been away from solar imaging for a while but am currently dusting off my Lunt LS80 THa DSII and starting anew. One thing that I always had some trouble with was reflections. I have heard about the Lunt Anti-Reflex Filter that is specifically for the LS80 THa/DSII. I ran a quick search for this topic on this forum but did not find anything. Does anyone have any experience with this filter add-on? For instance, how well does it work and how easy is it to install? Lunt does apparently still sell them but just doesn't advertise them - what's going on with that, I wonder? Any info would be helpful. :bow Thanks.

-Robert

I have never seen them on Lunt's website and never heard them mentioned here to the best of my memory. But I am fairly new to Ha solar so the more experienced folks here may have an answer.

If you search for lunt 80 polarizing filter (cloudynights) you will find some information

Here is one thread

They call it a high resolution glass (HRG) filter. It cost about $160 some years ago. There are a few CN threads on it. I have one for my LS80 DSII. It reduces reflections to about 10% but it also dims the view. (The primary image passes once and reflections pass through three times, and thus the improvement.) There are also a few threads on using a circular polarizer, which pretty much brings reflections down to 0 at about the same brightness as HRG, but it is a little finicky with binoviewers and you have to engineer how to install it. I now use the circ polarizer 100% of the time, and I have brightened my blocking filter a bit with a new blue glass filter from a friend.

Thanks, George. I would probably like to try the circular polarizing filter but I am not sure where and how to install it. Since you use it on a similar scope (LS80THa DSII), could you provide some directions or direct me to some website that discusses the installation? Thanks.

Hi Robert,

You may want to send George a private message to see what he did.

But I think the simplest solution would be to buy the HRG filter for your LS80 DSII:

You then simply replace the HRG filter element with a properly sized B+W Käsemann CP filter. Here's an example of the better grade B+W Käsemann XS-Pro version. Be aware that these filters can be very difficult to remove from their filter ring, so you may want to order it directly from Schneider USA East or West coast,

and they can remove it for you when purchased ;-)
