Mass pigeon loss over the weekend

Post by Montana »

This is a very interesting article being discussed today https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... shire.html

Sorry it is the Daily Mail but if you can get past all the junk, the article is quite interesting. They are blaming the Sun. Stuart, do you have any magnetic data from the weekend? is it unusual in any way? This isn't just a UK phenomenon but also Europe as well.

Hi Alexandra,

Interesting.

I can confirm that it was nothing to do with solar storms. Geomagnetic activity was low; just the usual background level with no fast flowing solar wind from coronal holes or CMEs.

Here are my data from Friday to Monday:

I believe the pigeons were released on Saturday 19th according to the race website. As you can see, there was nothing remarkable over the period of the race. Maybe NLCs were brighter over the weekend, but I'd assume the pigeons would be home/roosting at that time of night :)

They need another explanation.
