SHG Images HA and CA

Post by PDB »

Hi,

some images from this morning with the SolEx SHG. The 80mm refractor is back in use after some repairs to replace a broken focuser. (3D printing to the resque for making a conversion connector)

Some processing with Inti (thanks Douglas), Imppg and Gimp.

Thank you Paul for the excellent captures, where the Ha is my fav.
The Cal-H is interesting for the difference with Cal-K

Cheers
Terry

Hi Paul, the H-alpha is amazingly good. Was there a lot of variability from one image to another?

My impression is the 1st gen Solex does not gives the best images in Calcium. Christian seems to be getting better Calcium images now with the 2nd gen lenses (and also a 1200 l/mm grating).

Hi Douglas,

abolutely correct. CA with the first version is not really good. Need to oversharpen. So planning to upgrade to version 2 when Shelyak releases the lenses. (and reprint some parts)

Seeing was good, and all images I made had little differences. Stll need to figure out why, but I now used bin 1 at the same speed as bin2 and that gave me scans where the scan direction is smaller than the image height. This seems to produce much sharper images. Not really an idea why.

Regards,

Paul

Paul, that is interesting about the scanning speed. What FPS and scanning speed did you use? What was the Y/X ratio? The conventional wisdom is that Y/X should be less than 1 -- over scanning essentially. The logic has been this gives a kind of averaging that reduces noise. But perhaps it actually blurs the image instead? Maybe it's in fact better to not have lines overlap since each line is a distinct temporal recording.

Hi,

The FPS was 200 and the synscan was set to 3 which is 16x sidereal. This gives 1838 Y/X ratio.
Normally for bin1 I would use synscan rate2 (8x) which gives 0.857 Y/X
