September Solar Challenge

Post by Montana »

September Challenge:

Let's go back in time to Galileo, Carrington and closer to present day Hisako Koyama. They all spent many hours solar observing creating excellent observational data and none of them used a camera.

A link to Hisako Koyama fantastic works are here in the library viewtopic.php?f=7&t=30960 and some of the works of Galileo can be found here http://galileo.rice.edu/sci/observation ... wings.html

The challenge this month is to project the solar disc on to some white paper, you then carefully copy/trace the sunspots onto the paper. All you are doing is making in effect a photocopy, so no artistic skills necessary. This is exactly what these observers did. It helps to start by allowing the Sun to drift across a page with a straight line on it. Any sunspot should drift along the line in a straight way thus you have the east west orientation correct. It doesn't matter though, you can always correct it later.

Try and have fun, and think about those astronomers who did this long before you. It is a good art to learn and have some appreciation on how dedicated these people were. Fun to do with others too.
I tried this out back in 2000 when I had no camera or telescope, I just held a pair of binoculars up above a pre-drawn circle and traced the sunspots.

You can make it as simple or as complicated as you like, but please don't set fire to your clothes, the garden or your telescope.
There are some helpful guides on the web if you want to go the whole way or just get ideas to modify:

https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advi ... on-screen/
https://skyandtelescope.org/observing/s ... -sunspots/
http://cdn.immediatecontent.com/skyatni ... t-form.jpg

We will try this again next September and see if the sunspots get bigger or more numerous.
I look forward to seeing what we can achieve :)

Alexandra

PS please add your observations to this thread if you try it :)

That's a well great effort Marious on capturing all that was available today.

I can image that you must have enjoyed this rare-occasion and taken much longer to working your pencil to the bones eh!!

For another rare-change of late, you were not the only one to have clear-skies, as I have too here in S.E.England, which has also given me a chance for making some adjustments to the Sodium set-up. Still got to review all (21-Gbytes of data) and the job of processing and posting later.

Thanks you for your excellent results

Terry

5th September 2021 14:00 UTC

It was sunny today so I had a crack at the September challenge. Wow, I give Carrington et al the greatest respect :bow this was the most frustrating thing to do. Taking an image in 10 seconds is sooo much easier. Their dedication, giving us valuable data on the Sun for a couple of hundred years before the camera, well, they deserve a medal or award.

I soon realised using a 25mm isn't good enough, so tried a 3x Barlow with the 25mm lens which was much better. I also quickly realised you definitely need a shade, so used a cereal box. The further out you magnify the Sun the larger the spots become, but the least contrast you get, so I spent ages trying to get the best sized Sun (so lots of rubbing out). To get the really fine details, they must have had to project the image really large!! I couldn't see penumbral detail with this set up. Most frustrating was that my mount wouldn't track so was always moving out of the view so I had to sketch within 10-20 seconds or nothing matched. I guess this is why the Sky at Night instructions use a contraption to strap to your scope. Anyway, I tried my best at projection sketching, and I have now a much greater respect for the observers of the past.

Wow all of these sketches are both amazing & inspiring! Spent a birthday voucher on some sketching pencils and a pad to join in asap. Might need a bit of practise sketching from images I’ve taken to get used to it… good way to spend a cloudy day!

I tried projecting onto paper for the first time yesterday but couldn’t get it to focus! I had a 32mm eyepiece in a Skywatcher evostar 80ed then tried that in a 2x barlow with no luck… so caved in an imaged instead! I tried the 28mm which came with the scope unsuccessfully too. I’ll try again with a 10mm. I know there’s calculations for these problems but I’m more of a poet 🤷‍♀️

I'm using HB 2H pencils to sketching the sunspots directly from the eyepiece to the target through the telescope. My first sketch it was a nightmare, believe me!!

Wow you have a great sense of ‘by eye’ measurement to accurately place the spots then. My dad is currently making a solar projection screen which will help! My eyes aren’t great with an eyepiece so the other way I will try is a sketch direct from the laptop… but I’m not sure whether that’s cheating! It’ll be fun to sketch a sunspot and also capture the image and compare the two later to see what I miss! (The definition of ‘fun’ varies from person to person I realise ha ha!)
The portrait shows a beautiful rather than spotty face, you have a clear artist talent!

Thank you again Marios for your excellent drawings.
Lots of fine detail behold.

You can go on holiday (possibly) next week, as it could be a tad-quiet with only the big-grey circle after about Tuesday.

Enjoy the break, if you get the chance.. He he !!

Cheers
Terry

Good morning,
Sunday today 12/9/21 at 08:30 and the day looks very nice with a clear atmosphere for solar observation.
AR 12866 12868 12869 12864 on the limb with AR 12864 WNW being at the end of the disk with no spots visible...just"patch".
Grab and go set up 10px Sky-Watcher 1200/f4.7 and a 24-8mm eyepiece zoom and ready for imaging the sun in the photosphere.

Here is the souvenir and I hope you like it
Thanks for looking

Thanks again Marios for more of your fab sketches and yes you've spotted something happening in the N.E.Limb area. There is certainly a small amount of activity coming over the Limb there, as well as of late on Monday some also in the S.E.Limb area too, but as yet they don't seem to be significant - yet...

Keep up the good work.

Terry

Thanks again Marious for showing the last of those two magnificent spotty-regions and still no change from what's trying to appear (or disappear) on the S.E. & N.E.Limb areas.

CLEAR SKIES for tomorrow, where today has been much rain instead...

I forgot to check this thread. I am blown away by the sketches!! I so wish I could do this. My few attempts have been primitive by comparison. Sketching, if done accurately, as Marios has done is certainly superior to the descriptions that I give in my observational posts. And Alexandra, I also enjoyed your images at the scope doing sketches. And Nic, your portrait was awesome! I bet you could do wonderful sketches.

I will certainly remember to check this thread from now on!

Big thanks and thumbs up!

James

At least life is a tad easier without those spots, but the proms keep going somewhat.

Give me more time on fitting out the new mini-observatory instead.
