10 Oct 2021, AR12882 and WL Animation

Post by H-Alpha »

Kalimera all!

Against Jetstream and weather forecast, in between heavy clouds and a storm we had 3 hours of a beautiful sunny day with a fair seeing that allowed me to have some sun imaging after quite some time and my best WL granulation so far. The session included WL and H-Alpha.

Although I was experimenting with the Barlow in WL and had not planed (unfortunately) an animation in WL, I tried a posteriori to make one with 25 frames of successive captures that lasted 16 minutes. Despite one gap and some flickering (since the image processing had to be made manually...), I could record for the first time during my sun-life the boiling WL granules! :-) :-) :-)
Therefore, I thought worthy to share. ;-)

These are all beautiful, Alexandros! The boiling photosphere around the spots of AR12882 is well shown. Though I find your Ha images outstanding it's the continuum images I am just blown away by. Only fair seeing and they show the granulation cells and fine sunspot details so easily.

What scope did you use on the white light images?

Two thumbs up!!

James

Thanks a lot James!

Sorry I forgot to add the scope.

All was with Lunt 130MT + ZEISS Abbe Barlow
+ Baader Solar Prism for WL
The Barlow was at 1.7x for the photos and at 3x for the animation.

I wrote "fair seeing" because the SSM indicated an average of 1.7.
2021-10-10, SSM data.jpg
2021-10-10, SSM data.jpg (207.15 KiB) Viewed 465 times
However, I believe that the seeing was the best I ever had. I have posted SSM data in the past with average close to 1.0 and minimum at 0.3 or 0.4 that did not give as good results as these. So, SSM is an indication, but as people with much more experience have commented, it does not represent well some atmospheric layers.

PS: I also love the WL ;-)

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Alexandros: excellent results and I love your white light animation. I have not seen many of these in the forum.

Excellent results. I'm thinking more and more of getting an intermediate 5"-class setup.

As for the animation, note also how the inner tips of the penumbral filaments seem to move inward (though the material in them moves outward - it's known as Evershed flow). You'll see it better once you capture a longer one, like below (1.5 h):
