October Solar Challenge

Post by Montana »

Let's see some great Sunset or Sunrise images to brighten our days, but they must be taken during this October (none from your back catalogue :) ).

Extra points for those who catch the green/blue flash, or some large sunspots.

Belper looking west over the Blackbrook valley and The Mountain beyond a little group trees on a small mound.

Looks like a levelling down event to the west but no big bang.

Looks good Andrew, you know if you copy and paste the BBCode from flickr when composing a thread it will embed the image in the post rather than just a link.

Hi,

I thought I would be able to catch the green flash as I saw a tiny free cloud stripe over the horizon ...

... but no, weather Deity Zeus did put a nice cloud exactly in the middle of the Sun at the setting azimuth ...

Taken with a Canon EF 500 mm f/4.0 and a Canon 2X tele extender giving me real 1000 mm f/8.0

Indeed they are! :D
Usually when you don't want them to be. ;)
Do I get extra points for showing the umbra and penumbra for AR2882?

I'm still waiting for Alexandra to disqualify my entry as not being quite early enough.
Even if it was my first glimpse of the sun that day. Am I being too "disruptive?"

The second "173809" image is actually quite a cracking image Ivan - showing the differing colours of the Sun-set and the Volga reflecting such...

Thanks for sharing.

Rainer's capture is quite interesting and Chris has certainly proven how the filtering-effects of a little haze/cloud can save a few bucks..

Thank you Alexandra. :bow

I see you are still using that old tobacco filter, eh? ;)
I was about to tell you off for having dust bunnies on your image.
But it was a combination of AR2882 and a desperate need to clean my imaging monitor. :D

Hi,

Last time lapse of the Sun Set over the Pacific Ocean.

Until today I was able to process this images correctly.

Taken with a 500 mm f/4.0 lens with an image very two seconds and shrank it to about 60 frames per second.

Beautiful photos, sunset colors always hypnotize me.
You have made an interesting observation, we are witnessing the opposite process.

It's not all miserable Alexandra, as of course night-sky observations/imaging is now blossoming.

I guess the only to gain the best of both worlds (or should I say skies) is to move every six-months or so to the other-side of the equator/-52-degs S..

Excellent comparisons of your images.

Alexandra, I mistakenly thought that your last photos were sunset photos :)

Hi everyone...

I have not had many clear sunrise/sunset opportunities this month, but after downloading some pictures from my DSLR tonight I found a few that I shot back on Oct 2nd. If I remember the conditions there was a partially clear band near the horizon that the sun appeared through as it set.

I'm hoping for more sun this week based on the current weather forecast, but I'll see if it materializes ;)

Hello all.
Not a technical gem (iPhone) but my first fishing adventure with my son. We caught nothing, a few bites, but lots of early morning fun!

Hello everyone,
This is filmed about a week ago, on different days at sunset.

Fantastic images everyone, so beautiful! I feel inspired to catch sunsets now to see what I can get. I don't get a good view of sunrise since it happens behind a mountain, so sunset it is, lol.

Well, clouds have not been cooperating, but was able to see a bit of the sun as it neared the horizon, before disappearing completely behind the clouds.
