Leonard Comet 03 Dec 2021 - Passing M3 Globular Cluster
One of the most complex object post-processing wise I have ever taken. Took from my rooftop observatory in Ha Noi VietNam at a Bortle 9 area. This is technically sunlit so I think it should be here.

Absolutely perfect and stunning image Minh.
Presumably at/or getting closer to magnitude +4, which will make for visual and binocular seeing and nice to see by M3 too.
Not knowing the exact time/GMT-wise that you captured the image, did you see my comment to Pedro for getting this event ??
Thanks for sharing

Thanks. It's a shame my site was light polluted so heavily I could not get the longer tail.
Thanks Franco

I took this Friday morning 3AM to 5AM GMT +7. The comet is +6.3 then and is brightening up gradually. It's about +6 now so still a hard target for visual observer. I rarely do visual at mysite for the obvious reason. Even imaging at a Bortle 9 is extremely tough. The gradient was wild and the contrast is really low.
M3 is a surprise, I did not expect it passing through M3 on that session. After I took the first picture I was really excited.
I must have missed your conversation to Pedro. A link would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Minh.

Re: Leonard Comet 03 Dec 2021 - Passing M3 Globular Cluster
Thank you Minh for the times and yes indeed, even though just +6.3, being so close to M3 at least made it extra nice to image as well as find too.
Not too-often that two interesting-targets are caught in one image and you have done that very well.
I was replying to Pedro about something else and asked if he might have taken the same opportunity as you - viewtopic.php?f=36&t=32697&start=25 refers.
Best Wishes
Terry

Re: Leonard Comet 03 Dec 2021 - Passing M3 Globular Cluster
Nice work Minh,
Its lucky you are in a place nearer the equator. I am about 40 degrees north of where you live. So the comet is much higher in the sky and you will have much more opportunity to photograph it. Still a very nice picture !
Maybe you will print the comet and frame it ! Lovely work.
Did the comet start moving North and Westwards ?
It is going south and east in the UK

Re: Leonard Comet 03 Dec 2021 - Passing M3 Globular Cluster
Thanks, John. I wish I had darker sky so that I can capture longer and more detail in the tail. But it's already a miracle that the sky stay clear this time of year here in VN so should not ask for too much, I guess.
I wish it was higher in the sky. I am imaging from inner city, the comet was no higher than 35 degree that day makes the imaging and processing extremely challenging since it's foggy and the light pollution is very bad close to the horizon. It's moving south and westward here.Boso36 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 9:26 pm Nice work Minh,

Re: Leonard Comet 03 Dec 2021 - Passing M3 Globular Cluster
I tried imaging the Comet Leonard but failed to spot it in a 100mm focal length capture with a Canon 7D camera. May have to use a proper GoTo mount and plate solve to fix the comet.

Yeah you'd have a hard time locating the comet without a proper goto mount and plate solving. It's quite dim and I dont think it's ever going to be a naked eye target. Look fabulous on the camera especially with longer focal length though. How dark is your sky?

Re: Leonard Comet 03 Dec 2021 - Passing M3 Globular Cluster
Hi Minh,
I only have maybe 1 or 2 hours to image it before sunrise. The comet is low and getting lower towards the North North east. I would have to go to a park at 3am to try and get it lower !! Not sure if it is safe, too cold as well.
My Skies are Bortle 7 to 8 in my suburban area in North West London. A few street lamps nearby and neighbours Christmas lights and other security lights !!!!!
I have printed out some finder charts, so either I go for my Goto mount telescope or my Vixen polarie (camera). Either way, it would take me 2-4 hours to sort out with setting up and imaging.
Tonight is possible, if I feel up to it. I have printed out Finder charts to help me locate the comet !!

Thanks Minh,
Unfortunately, the clouds came early that night and the comet only rises after 4.30am so it would take over 1 hour to be visible from my garden. I now have to wait until after sunset....but the weather is not good...
So I may have to travel a long way, maybe up on a mountain ? So unlikely to image it this year....
