January Solar Challenge

Post by Montana »

January is Perihelion month, the closest in our orbit to the Sun https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/p ... stice.html

Perihelion 4 January 2022 06:52 147,105,052 km Aphelion 4 July 2022 08:10 152,098,455 km

So what you need to do is take a full solar disc as close as you can to perihelion, then repeat this in July and compare. We will do this again in July.

Or, if have any images taken around 5 July 2021 23:27, then take another in January and show us your comparison of the size difference.

Here is one I took in 2010, I am sure I can do better (if I get to see the Sun soon :)

Have fun and share your data here :)

Likewise Alexandra, the way our weather here in the S.E.England has been going in Dec'21, not much chance of a glimpse, but hey who knows..

I think seeing the sun might be the issue for me

Will have a look back on my website and see if i've imaged on perihelion day previously.

Not to worry, I don't think it matters too much the date, an image sometime in January will do :) then we can complete in July :)

A Celestial Pizza

Post by SoumyadeepMukherjee »

The image compares the sizes of sun and moon, the two largest celestial bodies in our sky. The four slices are from the year 2021 when these two celestial bodies were at their extreme sizes: largest and smallest. The moon at perigee appears larger the sun at perihelion. Also, the moon at apogee appears smaller than the sun at apohelion. The respective dates, their distance from earth and their angular diameter (in arcminutes) are mentioned in the image.

All the images were taken with the same camera (Nikon D5600) and same lens (Sigma 150-600c) at the same focal length (600mm).

That is absolutely fabulous!! I hadn't thought about comparing it to the Moon as well. I think this makes it very clear why every eclipse is so different!

Pedro,
Yours are excellent illustrations of the size change of the Sun as seen from the closest and furthest points in Earth's orbit. And the Sun is certainly a bit bigger in apparent size than the moon is in your first picture.

GONG doesn't show much of, or any size change between aphelion and perihelion. They must adjust for it in their images.

James

Excellent comparison, Alexandra.

Would love to try something similar myself, but imaging the perihelion Sun is a bit challenging from my latitude.

Dear Alexandra and all,
this is my attempt. This image is of particular significance to me because the top half actually comes from the very first image I made with my Daystar Solar Scout DS (my first H-alpha telescope). So the image not only shows the difference between Aphelion and Perihelion, but also the progress I did in H-alpha imaging in just 6 months.
All the best, Daniele

I know this doesn't work for everyone, but here's a 'stereoscopic' view of the Sun at Perihelion and Aphelion. The trick is to get the images scaled on your screen to align with your left and right eye and then stare through the images so that your brain merges them together (don't cross your eyes- this is a common mistake and is the wrong way to view these types of images). Let your eyes relax, stare through and your brain will do the rest.

Anyhow, what you should see is the aphelion disk fall away to the distance with the perihelion disk in the foreground.

Intended as a bit of fun and a novel way to show the effect. I hope it works for you.

Stu, I failed. Although I can easily see images in stereometric pictures with two white dots. In any case, both the photo and the idea are excellent!

Not to worry, Ivan. It can be tricky to see the full effect. It seems to work best on a smartphone, sideways on, as the image scale seems better suited to the eyes.

Thanks for trying :)
