Geomagnetic summary for 2021 vs 2020

As another year dawns it's time to summarise the geomagnetic activity for the year just gone.

Here I've produced a rolling average 'activity level' for each month during 2021and compare with the same for 2020. There are a couple of main points, I think:

1) The activity level for 2021 is generally higher than for 2020, as we'd expect as cycle 25 develops, especially considering the early part of 2020, which was relatively quiet, even around the spring equinox.

2) The 'equinox effect' is clear to see in the 2021 data during which times the magnetic environment on our planet is more susceptible to disturbances caused by the Sun, either by way of the solar wind, or CMEs.

We should see more frequent and stronger effects when the Sun unleashes more Earth directed CMEs as a result of its increasing levels of activity.

That's a nice record Stu! The equinoctal effects are clear to see. A good time to travel to northern latitudes for Aurora.

I thought I had replied to this but obviously didn't post.

Although there seems to be more activity this year, 2020 had some massive events and certainly more activity around the September equinox compared to this year. It will be great to see these progress over the next 10 years
