G1 Geomagnetic Storm 8th January 2022

Post by Carbon60 »

An unexpected geomagnetic disturbance last night developed into a G1 geomagnetic storm, creating beautiful aurora and some nice data on my magnetometer here in the UK.

The cause was a Co-rotating Interaction Region (CIR) http://www.physics.usyd.edu.au/~cairns/ ... node4.html in which high speed solar wind pushes and compresses lower speed solar wind ahead of it, creating a 'shock front'. I was certainly shocked when the data rolled in as things had been so quite of late. Hopefully we'll see some CMEs as cycle 25 continues to develop.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

That's a good record of the shock wave Stu! I had an alert from AurorawatchUK, but most of the pictures show aurora mainly in Scotland.
